

77, passed away Friday, September 17, 2010, at home surrounded by his family. Jim was born on April 15, 1933 to the late Matthew and Rose Mary (Hahn) Cummings. On August 8, 1959, Jim was married to Catharine P. Dorfmeister, who survives him along with seven of his children: Margaret “Peg” (David) Alexander of Muskegon; John; Stephen (Alice); and Sarah (Craig) Middlebrook, all of Jackson; Amy (Mark) Leslie, of Saline; David (Mindy Fuhlman), of Muskegon; and Susan (Tim) Furman of Jackson. He was preceded in death by an infant son, James, in 1974. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren: James Cummings III, Devyn and Kaleb Cummings of Jackson; Jamie (Adam) Ferris; Katherine and Lyndsie Cummings; Angela (Serhiy) Bardysh of Nashville, TN; Steven Middlebrook; Lauren and Justin Leslie of Saline; Jacob and Jessica Furman of Jackson and two great-grandchildren, Lily and Ayden Ferris. Jim’s surviving brothers and sisters include Rosemary Kite of VanNuys, CA; Bernard, of Lombard, IL; Fr. Paul Cummings of Jackson; Leo (Glenda) of Holly Pond, AL; Sr. Kathleen Cummings, OLV, of Huntington, IN; Richard (Mary Ann); and Theresa Hansel. Raised on the east side of Jackson, Jim grew up a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish and has been a communicant of Queen of the Miraculous Medal Parish since his marriage. Jim was a retired master plumber from the University of Michigan. Jim’s greatest love was his family and friends. He served on the Jackson City Commission in the early 1970’s and was a 40-year member of the Clark Lake Yacht Club, where he served as commodore in 1986. Jim was a skilled and enthusiastic bridge player, and along with Cathy belonged to many bridge groups. James was a kind man, guided by his Christian beliefs to love everyone he met. His examples of care and compassion for others are a legacy to us all. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 20, 2010 at Queen of the Miraculous Medal Church. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. A time of stories and scripture will begin at 7:00 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Jackson Interfaith Shelter or Queen’s Parish Food Pantry.
