Judy Kay Hawley (Ross), born June 29, 1942, in Wayne, Michigan, passed away on December 26, 2025, in her beloved home in Cement City. A dedicated educator for 30 years at Jackson Public Schools, Judy was renowned for her high standards and commitment to her students. She was an accomplished scholar, beginning her academic journey at the University of Michigan, where she studied journalism, before earning her bachelor’s degree in education from Michigan State University and her master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University. Even in retirement, her passion for teaching endured as she devoted her time to helping inmates earn their high school diplomas.
The daughter of Hector and Faye Ross, Judy was a fierce advocate for human rights and animal welfare. Her profound love for animals was evident in her care for many pets and her tireless efforts to support wildlife and environmental conservation. She enjoyed the arts, was proud of her Scottish heritage, and delighted in traveling both domestically and abroad, exploring historical sites. She leaves behind a legacy of advocacy, education, and a deep love for animals and the natural world. Her family and friends will honor her memory by living boldly and passionately, just as she did.
She is survived by her children, Laurie Brinkle and Dawn (Rey) Del Rio; her grandchildren, Tauren and Regan Del Rio; her brother, Robert (Sue) Ross; her niece, Kristen Ross; her nephew, Michael (Joanne) Ross; and her great-niece, Aria Lauterbach. Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Hector and Faye Ross, and many friends and extended family members.
