Calvin Paul Potter, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and follower of Christ, died peacefully on September 15, 2017, in Jacksonville, Florida, with his family surrounding him with love, hymns, and prayers. He is survived by his adoring wife of 42 years, Suzanne Kanis (Potter). He was preceded in death by his father, Adrian Potter, and his brother, Ken Potter, and father-in-law, Rudy Kanis. Born on August 26, 1953, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Calvin was the son of Adrian and Johanna Potter.
Calvin’s career took him from furniture to Christian retail and at opposite ends of the country—from Michigan to Florida back and forth. From working at Steelcase as a Facilitator, to becoming a manager for Kregel Bookstores, Calvin excelled in the business world with a spirit of godliness and integrity. After being promoted to district manager of Family Christian stores, he served joyfully and throughout his illness as an Account Executive for DaySpring Cards. His colleagues adored his caring nature, witty sense of humor, and warm smiles that were contagious whenever he appeared with satchel and coffee mug in hand. His DaySpring mission was mirrored throughout his family, in the form of tender handwritten notes and cards to his children and grandchildren.
Calvin’s greatest joys could be found in his own home tending to his immaculate yard’s palms and hearty green lawn. “Papa” delighted in simple times with his family… making dynamite breakfasts, tickling the grandkids, reading in his study, and providing godly insight into every situation. As his grandchildren’s biggest fan, his encouragement and wisdom will remain in their hearts throughout the rest of their lives.
Although his work took him to places all over the country, often traveling as a couple, he was happiest when he was nearest to home – biking and spending time at the beach. He frequented there, sporting his straw hat and perched in a beach chair with Suzanne by his side.
Calvin’s love for Christ was exemplified through his music. He often found himself a gentle tenor, harmoniously blending with other vocalists in powerful hymns of worship that he sang with sincere purpose. For a season, he gladly served as a music minister bi-vocationally. And if he wasn’t singing, you could find his fingers floating over the piano keys.
His courageous fight with cancer and daily postings inspired many followers on social media, and his love for Christ was amazing and unwavering through his eloquent words until just a few days ago. He was called home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ completely at peace.
In addition to his wife, Calvin is survived by his children: Cara and David Hodges (Clayton, Caroline, Catie, Chloe, Caleb); Nathan and Lauren Potter (Addy, Liam); Brandon and Whitney Potter (Adrian, Logan); his mother, Johanna Potter (101 years old); a brother, Harvey Potter, and sister Shirley (Gary) Ensing; several nephews and nieces, and mother-in-law, Cindy Kanis.
