John Landry passed away peacefully on April 4, 2022. He was predeceased by his parents, Leo and Katherine Landry, his first wife, the mother of his children, Mary Fox Landry, and his son James Leo Landry. John is survived by his sister Judy Gates, his wife of 40 years, Anne, his son John Landry, Jr. (Coleen), his daughter, Mary Landry, stepson Kevin Hemphill and stepdaughter Deborah Browning (Travis). He is also survived by granddaughter Caitlin Prager (Ben) and their children Lucia, Lily and Isaak, grandson Jack Reese (Samantha) and their children Madeline Rae and Theo, grandsons Brian Landry and Conor Landry.
John was born in Plattsburgh, NY on March 17, 1934. He graduated with honors from Hunter College in NYC with a degree in Mathematics. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean War. The majority of his working life was spent as a programmer with IBM in Poughkeepsie and Kingston, NY. Upon retirement from IBM he began the career of which he was most proud and in which he felt the greatest satsifaction, teaching Statistics at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie.
John’s greatest passion aside from his family was duplicate bridge. He played in many tournaments at all levels over the years and achieved the rank of Diamond Life Master. To those who encountered him at the bridge table he was most accurately described as an adorable curmudgeon, grumpy on the outside, soft and sweet on the inside.
John and Anne traveled extensively. He readily admitted that his favorite trip was to Greece. To stare up at the Acropolis and to walk on the ground where Socrates had strolled left him completely in awe.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date at the convenience of the family. Deepest gratitude to the caring professionals at the McGraw Hospice Center where John spent his last days in comfort and peace. Memorial contributions may be sent to Community Hospice and Palliative Care, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL, 32257.
