Kenneth Dale Hagan, age 63, of Atlantic Beach, FL passed away at his home.
Ken was born in Plant City, Florida on January 11, 1962, the youngest of three boys. Growing up he was an active member of the youth at Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church. Ken attended Wolfson High School in Jacksonville, graduating in 1980. He attended Emory University in Atlanta. One of his highlights there was playing rugby where he made lifelong friends. While at Emory Ken met the love of his life, Cathy Wilbourn. After graduation, they married on August 18,1984 and remained in Atlanta where Ken attended medical school, obtaining his medical degree. In 1988 they relocated to Tampa where Ken completed his residency in General Surgery.
In 1993 Ken joined his father’s General Surgery practice at Memorial Hospital. At that time Ken and Cathy bought a home in Atlantic Beach, putting down roots in a community they grew to love.
Ken and Cathy both loved the beach, their “happy place”. They enjoyed walks on the beach and taking their dogs to play there. They also had a love for travel, mostly to the Caribbean Islands, California and Italy. Cooking was a passion for both. They took an Italian cooking course and shared many wonderful meals with family and friends.
Ken was a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Board of Surgery, Duval County Medical Society, Florida Medical Association and Southeastern Surgical Society. He received many awards for his medical service, including Outstanding Resident Award multiple years from the University of South Florida, Volunteer Specialist Physician of the Year, Referral Volunteer Physician of the Year from We Care, Physician of the Year from Memorial Hospital, and Award of Excellence for serving as Department of Surgery Chair at Memorial Hospital.
Ken shared his gift of general surgery not only in the United States, but also in other countries. He traveled numerous times to Haiti and the Philippines. Additionally, he worked with the Florida prison system.
One of Ken’s passions was working with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Northeast Florida where he tutored students. Ken also volunteered at his church, Community Presbyterian in Atlantic Beach, where he and Cathy were active members.
Ken was predeceased by his wife, Cathryn Wilbourn Hagan; father, Wayne V Hagan, M.D.; brother, Ted Hagan; parents-in-law, Charles and Dorothy Wilbourn; brothers-in-law, Scott Wilbourn and Chuck Wilbourn.
Ken is survived by his mother, Norma Hagan; brother, Allen (Jo) Hagan; sisters-in-law Debbie Hagan and Sue Wilbourn; brother-in-law, Tim (Elaine) Wilbourn; nieces Jessica (Nate) Stanton, Allison Hagan (Bobby Skelton), Lauren (Cory) Mansour, Alexi Wilbourn; nephews Jeremy McElroy and Cody (Eva) Wilbourn; and great-nephew, Erik Wilbourn.
A memorial service will be held Monday, November 3, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Community Presbyterian Church, 150 Sherry St, Atlantic Beach, FL. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
