With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Mark Thurston Stewart, a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and respected scholar. Mark departed this life in Jacksonville Beach, FL, alongside his beloved wife, Janet, leaving behind a legacy of intellect, kindness, and deep devotion to family.
Mark was born in Glen Ridge, NJ, moved to Belgium as a small child, and spent most of his younger years growing up in Long Island, NY, with his brother Russell. Mark was the proud father of Matthew and a beloved father-in-law to Kinsey. He found great joy in being “Grandpa” to Tanner, River, and Archer, sharing his love of nature, knowledge, and adventure with them.
A distinguished geologist and hydrologist, Mark dedicated his career to education and research as a longtime professor at the University of South Florida in Tampa. During his career, Mark served as the resident sinkhole expert for Mid-Florida and even appeared on CBS News as a knowledge expert. His work inspired countless students and colleagues, and his passion for understanding and preserving the natural world was evident in all he did.
Mark had a love of learning and found beauty, goodness, and positivity all around him. He passed along the importance of knowledge, kindness, and perseverance to his son Matt, along with a friendship and legacy that won’t be forgotten. In retirement, Mark embraced the simple joys of life—taking long walks with his dog Ellie, paddleboarding and surfing at the beach, hiking in the mountains, and spending meaningful time with his family. Becoming a grandfather may have been the greatest surprise to Mark, and he embraced his role as “Grandpa” by creating new traditions and memories that will live on with his grandchildren. His gentle spirit, thoughtful presence, and quiet wisdom will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Mark is survived by his son Matthew, daughter-in-law Kinsey, his grandsons Tanner, River, and Archer, and a wide circle of family, friends, and former students who will carry his memory forward.
A joint celebration of Mark and Janet’s lives will be held on December 13th, at 1:00pm at Beaches Chapel by Hardage-Giddens where loved ones will gather to honor their memory, support the family, and share stories of the beautiful life they lived together. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be directed towards Metropolitan Ministries or The Nature Conservancy as they were both important to Mark and Janet.
