
William Stephen Hinton, 67, died on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at Baptist Medical Center Beaches, Jacksonville Beach, FL. He was born January 6, 1944 in Nashville, TN to the late William Alexander Hinton and Hazel Carmichael Hinton. He attended Vanderbilt University and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from University of Tennessee (UT) Knoxville. He began his professional career at the family owned Post Sign Company and later at Cummings Sign Company both in Nashville. He married his elementary and high school sweetheart, Judy Oliver Hinton in 1971. In 1984, the family moved to Deland, FL and in 1987 to Neptune Beach, FL. He retired from the sign business in 2004. During his lifetime he was a UT Volunteer football fan. He was an avid scuba diver and dive instructor, travelling with his family to various dive destinations around the world. He was an Episcopalian and served on several church vestries and was a Lay Eucharistic Minister. He enjoyed reading and debating issues with friends. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, his son Eric Alexander Hinton, daughter Susan Hinton Sylvis, son-in-law Jason Michael Sylvis, grandsons Isaac Alexander Sylvis and Aaron Bryce Sylvis, sister Janet Hinton Ohlinger, brother-in-law John Frederic Ohlinger survive him along with family and friends.
St. Paul’s by the Sea Episcopal Church in Jacksonville Beach, FL will hold a memorial service on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 10:00am. The family gratefully acknowledges the care and concern of doctors and nurses at Baptist Medical Center and Hospice staff. Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s by the Sea or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
