I am devastated and profoundly saddened to learn of this.  I have thought about you both often over the years.  I am so very, very sorry in ways words could never express.  It is clear you were an amazing mom who raised an exceptional young man.  Many of my questions have been answered by all the love and admiration written here about him. oh Tara, im so sorry. i just got the news last night when hunter came over. i really really am bummed to hear about Zack. he was such a good boy. i havent seen him since he was a baby and toddler but the time i did get to spend with him was so awesome. playing on the beach he was so much fun.he was special totally.  i dont know what else to say except i am just shocked... chad

So dear friends and family, I am finally able to add my entry. It's been 2 months and we still don't know how or why. As hard as it is, I try to remember that God does not make mistakes, so He must know what He is doing, even though we cannot understand. I was with Tara the day Zach was born. I was so proud that she asked me to be her labor coach and being with her at Zach's birth was one of the proudest days of my life. I am so proud of the little boy that became a man. Zach was a joy to be around, as everyone who knows him knows. Zach had a golden heart - he was always kind to everyone and always willing to help whoever needed it. Zach was an angel on earth before he was an angel in Heaven.

Zach continues sending signs that he is near and watching over everyone. When Tara was getting music together for Zach's funeral, one of the songs Zach's girlfriend suggested was "We are Young" by Fun.  I had never heard of that song, or never really listened to it if I did. My aunt Renee kept humming the tune all day. I was at Sandy's house until midnight, working on plans for the service. When I got in my car to go home, that song came on. I was impressed, but there was more. As we were leaving the church after Zach's funeral, we got in the car and the song came on. Emily heard that song play over and over all the way to the cemetary.  The next day, as we drove to the cemetary, the song came on and was timed so perfectly that it went off just as we pulled up in front of Zach's place. There are many times I was thinking about Zach when someone would send me a text that said "The song is on".  I could go on and on. Others have told me stories of extraordinary butterfly activity we believe are signs from Zach. I share this because it helps to know that Zach is close.

I feel that  Zach has brought our family closer together and taught us that we need to depend on each other for strength, comfort and support. My heart is broken because we don't have Zach with us, that we cannot hug the peaceful giant, that he won't be here to play football with Evan. My heart is broken even more so because I cannot now nor ever fix or heal the pain of Tara and Sandy.  I can only try to be there when they need me, when you need me. I miss you Zach and will forever. I know I will see you again one day, just around the corner. In the meantime, I will try to look after your mom and grandma as best I can.  I love you Tara and Sandy!!  Call me anytime, day or night. I will drop what I am doing and be there for you.  I am praying for you everyday that God will send you peace and comfort.  Minute by minute and day by day. Love!!!

Zach was a great man. Where ever he went he made people smile.Even if I didn't know Zach as good as good as I would've liked to I love him. I have many memories of him and me, at the play ground in eastpoint,talking to Tatiana at mamma's house, and of course Zach as he tried to fit on the little twirling toy on the play ground but he couldn't fit.Zach was so strong and caring. God blessed us by giving Zach to us, and I will never understand why he had to leave, but I will always remember the wonderful Zach we all know and love, the one that told me I was so smart,the one I wrote about on the beach! we will remember ZACHARY DAVID DODSON (the great)

Tara & Sandy- Even now, this is so hard ……….  Prayer helped deliver this poem with dignity because that is what Zach was all about and that is what he deserved! Most of my sweet memories are of a very young child.  So cute, sweet, smart and inquisitive, full of joy and delighting in his surroundings either at home with Mama or with Grandma or visiting Mommina & Papa's place on Cat Point. I will always remember staying up all night in East Point when Zach was a newborn, precious! When he was a little older, Zach had so much fun playing with cousins, and running from the geese .   I loved to  “LURK” at him and he would squeal and hide from me.   “Understand” (Zach's name for Stan), Uncle Stan & I loved visits to our house too!  Alli, Lauren and Zach had a blast in the pool in Tallahassee!!!!  We recently talked about all those times, I am so glad for those conversations and for spending a little time with Zach and Tatiana!  Their relationship was very sweet an extension of who he was becoming, growing into a full life and sharing it with someone that returned his love.  Gods' Blessings to you Tatiana!!!!  Come and visit me anytime!!!!  It was also a pleasure to meet and spend time with his friends from UA, thank you all for loving Zach!  I would really love more time to get to know the adult Zach, he reminds me so much of those rare JOHN WAYNE types,  a few Strong & Caring men I have been proud to know, he was such a joy to be around and talk with, his ease and comfort made everyone relax, you just knew that you were in the presence of someone that was concerned for those around him, and that he would find a way to make everything right.   God blessed Zach by giving him to a Mom, Grandmother and family/friends that cherished him and God blessed us all by bringing Zach into our lives!  I will forever think of Zach when I hear Matthew 25:21, “Well done, good and faithful servant.   I love you All!

What an awesome young man you raised.  It was truly a privilege to be part of Zach's life.  For almost 22 years, he was incredible every day.  He was wonderful in his journey from a child to a man.  You raised a perfect child who loved his family and cared about everyone he came in contact with.  Zach always followed the rules as a child and it showed in his character and integrity as a man.  You always put Zach first and never compromised in giving him the love and tools he would need in life.  How proud you must be of his accomplishments and who he became.  I am so sorry for your loss.

My Dearest Tara, Sandy and Family,

I feel I am ready to write something, but still at a loss for words.  Tara, you are the BEST mom a child could ever wish for and Sandy, you are the MOST giving grandmother.  I was able to watch how both of you gave Zach lots of love, a great education, support and taught him important life lessons.  You molded a young boy into a man who impacted everyone he met in a positive way.  I know you are both so proud of him and I know the loss and pain you feel is unimaginable.  I promised Zach I would always be here for you Tara so lean on me.

Dearest Tara - while I didn't know Zach personally - the pride and love that you showed whenever you talked about him showcased what an amazing person and loving son he was. There are no words that can express how sorry I am for your loss. I know he was your world - the star in your sky.

I lived with Zach in the Parker-Adams dormitory. While I did not know Zach as well as others, I do know that he is one of the most genuine people I have ever met.

    Zach,  When Tina read this poem at your funeral it somehow made me feel better, like you aren't completely gone and unreachable. While there is much sorrow in the absence of your physical self, you are still here in every other way. We can all feel your presence. It might be in a song we hear on the radio that makes us think of you or a time we were together. It might be a joke or witty comment that makes us laugh and think to ourselves, " That sounds like something Zach would say." It might be in the wind or crash of the waves on the beach or when we see someone wearing an Alabama t-shirt. We might hear a voice or laughter that sounds like yours and our hearts will skip a beat. We will turn to look for you and experience a brief moment of sadness, remembering that you are not there to be found. Then we will smile to ourselves in being reminded of you, knowing that you are near. We each have unique memories of you, jokes we laughed about, songs we listened to, moments we shared. These are the things that will keep you near to us until we can be together again. As we all know life goes on and we will live it to the fullest, for that is what you did and will want us to do. We will comfort each other while talking, smiling, laughing and crying over our memories of you. In your absence, we will look after your mom and grandma. We will love each other and appreciate the time we still have on earth together. We will strive to make choices that will make you proud because we know that you will be watching. Though I never met Zach in person, as one of his online class professors, I was always so impressed by his courtesy and kindness. He was always so eager to learn and participate any way he could. It just shows what kind of a person Zach was to make such a good impression with people he never even met. I will miss Zach and will always carry a little of him with me. He always, without fail, made me smile. Zach made a difference in my life and when I looked back after I heard the unthinkable news, I noticed that the last missed call on my phone from a few days earlier was from Zach. It's still not really sinking in.  

In my role as Faculty-in-Residence in Zach's Freshman Living-Learning Community where I live and closely interact with students, I got to know Zach extremely well. And, as anyone who knew Zach at all can attest, it didn't take long. The thing about Zach is that he was so full of life that it spilled over onto others. He was well-rounded, intelligent and had a curiosity that is rare. I can't count the number of times that he sat with me discussing, questioning and probing. There was always something that he wanted to know more about or share his opinion on.

I could go on and on but I'll end with this. I recently wrote a recommendation for Zach and now I wish that I had shared a copy of it with him. I didn't but I'm going to close with some excerpts from that recommendation letter. I meant every word of it.

'I saw steady growth in Zach throughout the academic year, so much so, that I encouraged him to apply to be a Living-Learning Community Fellow during his sophomore year.'

'He always went over and above the call of duty.'

'He has remained in regular contact with me and I have had the honor of hearing about his continuing accomplishments. I remember when he decided to change his major and how he came to the realization that he could handle the challenges of a more quantitative major. I have always had the feeling that Zach has more of an internal motivation than an external one and that he is most satisfied with himself when taking on a challenge. I suppose the best way to say it is that he loves to push himself.'

'In the past couple of years, there have been two particular things (outside of the strictly academic realm) which Zach has talked to me about repeatedly with great passion. The first is his interest in international travel and his openness to perhaps living and working abroad. He is certainly attuned to the interconnected world that we live in and that seems to me to be a mindset much needed today and into the future. The second of the two is his obvious love of his current student position at the University of Alabama Center for Community-based Partnerships (CCBP). Zach dropped by to visit with me a few weeks ago and although we talked about a range of things, the conversation always kept coming back to something related to his CCBP job. He obviously loves it and from what I can gather, it is because he feels as if he is making a significant contribution and that his contribution is acknowledged and appreciated by the other CCBP staff. In fact, Zach proudly told me about his recent nomination for Student Employee of the Year and from what I could gather, he is really not too concerned about whether he wins the award. What does seem important to him is that the staff thought highly enough of him to make the nomination.'

'In closing, I would add that Zach is mature for his age, highly motivated and seems to thrive under pressure and the weight of responsibility. He is serious but lighthearted and always demonstrates a willingness to pitch in and do more than his fair share. Zach exudes a certain confidence but never a sense of arrogance or pretention. I give Zach Dodson my highest recommendation without reservation.'

I watched Zach grow from a tiny baby into a big, strong man. He was many things to many people and loved by all. Everyone who ever met Zach knows that he was an amazing person. His life was filled with the love of friends and family. He experienced and accomplished so much and was always a friend to everyone. Nephew, Scholar, Fisherman, Friend, Zach was all these things and so much more to us. He could brighten a room with his smile and find humor in most anything that was said. Dear Tara, words seem inadequate to express the sadness I feel about Zach's death, but I know for certain that we never lose Zach whom we love, even to death.  He continues to participate in every act, thought and decision we make.  His love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories.  I find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared Zach's love.  Zach brought so many gifts to the life of everyone who knows him. We will never forget him! A Son Leaves a Trail of Memories

A little mud tracked in...some grass stains on his knees...his handprints on the walls and windows, well-worn memories.

Some Pictures that he drew way back when he was small...the marks that measured years and growth spurts climbing up the wall.

A few small dents and dings from "accidents" remain...each tells its tale, but no one here is likely to complain.

Those boyhood souvenirs together play a part, in how a son can leave his mark, so clearly on the heart. 

Ever since that first tiny footprint, Zach, you've made your mark on this family in so many ways. 

Thanks for all the great memories and for being the kind of son any parent would be proud to have.

The Family

Zachary worked at The University of Alabama Center for Community-Based Partnerships for the last two years.  He was a very hard worker and completed every task that was assigned to him.  He was an exceptional student worker.  He and I talked on Friday before the office closed at 5:00 p.m.  He was very happy to be graduating and was getting ready for graduate school and was exciting about extending his stay in Tuscaloosa for graduate school.  His death was a great shock to me on Monday when I received the news.  We loved Zacahary and will always cherish him in our memories.  He will always be a part of the the Center for Community Based Partnerships.  We cannot explain it but we must accept his passing to be with the Lord.  As I shared with one staff member this week, I believe that God had a task to be done and only Zachary was qualified to complete this task.  So, with much pain and sadness we mourn with the family and friends during this hour but are still fill with joy knowing that with our faith and his faith we will see each other again.  Zackary, we miss you and love you.

Tara, I can't begin to say how sorry I am to hear about Zach, words just will not come out.  I wish you and your family all the best, Hannah sends her love you to all.

Words can not express the sadness I feel at this time. I pray God bless and keep you during this sorrowful time. Zach's life was a life we all should be proud off. A young man in college giving his all and making the strides he made to graduate with honors in wonderful. The life he lived speaks for him. I will always keep Zach in my heart and he will always still be known as my nephew.  Please know that Zach is with God and you will see him again.
