A native of Jacksonville, Palmer was a graduate of Lee High School, class of 1963 and Wofford College, class of 1967. He was strong in his faith with a charitable heart as he was involved in many civic and charitable organizations, including Goodwill, DePaul School of Northeast Florida, Mercy Ships, and Rotary Club of Jacksonville.
Palmer’s professional career was defined by founding the first independent money management firm in Jacksonville in 1985. His firm, The Palmer Knight Company, continues his legacy today.
After retirement, Palmer enjoyed traveling with his wife and woodworking in his shop. He spent countless hours making hundreds of wooden toys for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots program in North Georgia, earning the nickname “The Real Secret Santa”. His grandchildren never left their Pop’s wood shop empty handed.
Palmer was predeceased by his parents, Carol Finley Knight, Sr. and Margaret Palmer Knight and sibling Elise Knight Snell. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Maria Brownett Knight; siblings Carol Finley Knight, Jr.(Virginia) and Susan Knight Chunn; children, Palmer Knight, Jr (Tracy), Davis Knight (Elizabeth), and Jonathan Knight (Brooke); his grandchildren, Ashlyn Betros (Tim) and Austin Knight, Matthew and Zoe Knight, Jonathan and Grace Knight.
A memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on October 9th at 10:00 a.m. Friends and Family are welcome to honor Palmer’s life immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to DePaul School of Northeast Florida
