Agnes Ruth Oakley, age 88, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away on Friday, December 10, 2021 at Orange Park Medical Center. Agnes was born October 1, 1933 in Memphis, TN to Herman W Heuberger and Aleece Currie.
Aggie Oakley AKA Mom and Granny
Mom, born and raised in Memphis Tennessee. With 2 sisters and a brother. Ended up in
Jacksonville Florida with 3 children. Linda, Diane and Bobby.
She attended Southside High School in Memphis. Her employment consisted of positions with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Sprint, Normandy Village Utility Company and St Vincents Hospital.
The organizations she was apart of is volunteered at St. Vincents Hospital, Board of Directors Normandy Village Utility Company, Member of Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Advisory Council and Episcopal Church.
Mom loved helping people. She volunteered at St Vincent’s Hospital for over 20 years. I can’t
begin to tell you of the stories of Mom baking treats and delivering to people and the satisfaction of bringing a smile to their face. She brought baked treats especially at Christmas time to the Fire Station, her doctors office, dentist office, rehab centers she had stayed at, her pharmacist , Normandy Village Utility, Sam’s Florist and always made sure she had plenty for the family and everyone in her neighborhood.
Anytime you went to Mom’s house she had plenty of cookies and M&M’s to share with anyone
who came to her house. You couldn’t help but notice her collection of probably over 400 bells
that were displayed in curio cabinets for everyone to see. Once you got past the bells there
were usually about 5 or so teddy bears sitting on the couch, well except Christmas time she
had 25 special Christmas bears that got to come out. As you make your way to the kitchen,
after stopping at the M&M’s and cookies you gotta see her Pillsbury DoughBoy Collection of
about 20 different pieces on display in the kitchen.
The grandkids Leslie, Linsey, Carter, Kalee and Regan all had fond memories about going to
Granny’s house and not to mention some adventures in riding in the car with Granny driving.
Granny always had something planned when they came over. Granny was an avid coloring
book artist and taught all the grandkids the art of coloring , it didn't matter to her if you went
outside the lines as long as you enjoyed it. As they got a little older they were certainly in the
kitchen helping bake all the treats she was giving away, well and maybe they got to eat a
couple also. A couple of driving trips taking the grandkids to school were very scary and very
funny after the fact. A couple of different times Granny got a little confused on which lane she
was supposed to be driving in, so the kids would hollar from the back seat “Granny you are
going the wrong way!" and she would always tell them don’t tell your Mom or dad. Sometimes
in the morning before taking them to school she might have a little extra to walk around Big
Lots , one of her favorite stores. They were especially helpful to Granny when it came to
computers, cell phones and remote controls. She would throw hands up in the air and say I
don't know what to do with these things. They always helped her figure it out, but they would
have to do it again the next time they came over.
Mom had a lot of friends through the years either from neighbors , work or as a volunteer. She
often went to lunch with many of them. She went on a couple of cruises and trips to various
places including Las Vegas. She had a strong arm from the slot machines.
Linda enjoyed a couple of gambling trips with her. Mom was always the lucky one when it
came to connecting flights, her arrival terminal was next to her departure terminal every time.
Linda also had a hard time pulling Mom away from the nickel slot machines. Mom was not a
big time gambler, she would take her allotment of money she saved and when it was gone the
slots were over.
Mom when she wanted something done she would ask you and then tell you whenever you
get a chance to do it will be fine. No rush. But that is not what she meant. She would call the
next day and ask why you have not gotten things done yet. What she always meant was I want
it done right now. She was always very grateful, but impatient.
Mom was a little more forgetful over the past couple of years and a little more demanding,
however we would not trade that time with her, it was priceless.
We can’t even begin to tell you about Mom’s obsession with the Game Show Network.
I can’t tell you how many times I heard Mom say, “It will all work out”.
Granny, Mom you will be missed so much and we all LOVE you!
