Navy veteran, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother Catherine Carryl, age 97, passed away on March 16, 2021. Affectionately known as “Kit” by her friends, and “Tutz” by her Minnesota relatives, she was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Katharin Marie and George Isaac Vogel on December 29, 1923. Raised in St. Cloud, she graduated from Cathedral High School in 1941.
During World War II, she helped the war effort by enlisting in the Navy as a WAVE and working on the war planes as a “Rosie the Riveter.” She married Navy Chief James J. Carryl on February 7, 1948. Together they raised 7 children, spending the past 60 years in Jacksonville, Florida.
Known as an avid golf enthusiast, she comfortably followed all major tournaments from her recliner, often quoting golf statistics and sharing personal facts about each player. But her first love was her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren who knew her affectionately as “Gramma Kit.” Her children remember her as a faith-filled dedicated mother who prayed for them continuously.
She was a Charter Member of Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Over the years, she was involved in many activities in the church, always supporting the needs of her parish with her time, talents, and sacrificial giving. She was a friend to all and maintained many lifetime friendships with former neighbors, co-workers, and friends from church.
She was preceded in death by her husband James, mother and father, a brother, Thomas Vogel (Judy), her four sisters - Marion Robinson (Hugh), Evelyn Frank (Jerry), Georgianne Como (William), and Joan Schuh (Jack), one of her five daughters, Kathleen Carryl, and her great granddaughter, Loralei K. Carryl.
Her survivors include her four daughters, Joanne Hooten (Buddy), Georgianne Normand (Skip), Margaret Spencer (Fred), Susan Madaus (Martin), and two sons, Michael Carryl (Laura) and Robert Carryl (Sheri). She is also survived by her 16 grandchildren, Tyler Hooten; Will, Caroline, and Moss Normand; Sterling, Fritz, and Sierra Spencer; Roman, Alec, and Marcus Madaus; Jason Carryl (Karen), Morgan Pellum (Allen), and Jonathan Carryl (Amanda); Madison, Abraham, and Gracie Carryl, and seven great grandchildren, Nora, Ada, and Laurel Carryl and Micah, Josiah, Emma, and Camelia Pellum, all of whom she cherished dearly.
Arrangements are being made by Hardage-Giddens Riverside Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Boulevard. Due to covid-19 concerns, a private family funeral Mass will be held at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church followed by a private family interment at the VA National Cemetery in Jacksonville. A memorial is being planned for a future date when both family and friends can safely gather to celebrate her wonderful life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Roof Fund at her beloved Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church.
