David was born on January 21, 1939 to Gladys Barrett and Howard J. Buttery in Bridgeport, CT. He served in the Navy for over 20 years, serving on ships including the Courtney and the Saratoga. He retired in 1974 as a Chief Petty Officer. He worked at Atlantic Marine (now BAE) on ships large and small.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, MaryAnn Buttery as well as his four children, Susan Bedard, David L. Buttery, Daniel Buttery, and Shawnna Buttery. David was also a proud grandfather to five grandchildren (Christopher, Samantha, Matthew, Zachary, and Orson) and one great-grandchild (Edelweiss). He asked his grandkids to call him FOG (foolish old goat) from his time in the navy. FOG was an avid bird watcher with a backyard filled with birdhouses of all shapes and sizes.
A remembrance will be held at Hardage-Giddens Chapel Hills (850 St Johns Bluff Rd N) on December 30 at 10am. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to B.E.A.K.S Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Jacksonville or the Cornell Lab of Ornitology.
