Our beautiful, strong, courageous girl, Delaney Anne Gurgel, 38, left us on Friday, May 27th after a long battle with cancer. She was an inspiration to us all in the way she approached her diagnosis, and her
determination to beat it. She didn’t stop fighting even at the very end.
She leaves behind a loving husband and best friend, Wayne Gurgel, her only son, Jeremiah Bennett, mother and father, Brenda and David DeWitt, brother Aiden (Harlie) DeWitt, nephew Jace DeWitt, and
beloved grandmother Shirley Smith.
She was predeceased by her maternal grandfather, WL Smith Jr., and paternal grandparents Bill
and Juanita DeWitt.
Delaney loved animals of all kinds, with a special affinity for dogs. She never met one that didn’t love her back. She volunteered at Celestial Farms where she helped raise a pig (Rooter) from birth. She was a die-hard Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block fan and had to have tickets anytime they played anywhere close. She also loved her Mickey Mouse and Disney World and it truly was the happiest place on earth as far as she was concerned. She enjoyed bowling with her family and WWE on TV. She was a kind,
loving, and generous soul who shined with an inner light that is rarely seen.
We will celebrate her life on Monday, June 6th, at Hardage Giddens, Riverside Memorial Park, 7242 Normandy Blvd with a family only viewing from 10am – 12pm, followed by a graveside service at
1pm.
In lieu of flowers, if you are able, please donate in Delaney’s name to the Children’s Tumor Foundation, in the hopes that one day a cure for neurofibromatosis (NF1) and her rare related cancer (MPNST) can be discovered. https://www.ctf.org/get-involved/make-a-donation
