

Hammond was a 1961 graduate of the former Salisbury High School. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Navy and attended the Golden Gate University and Naval Officer Logistics schools during his service. As a result of his outstanding performance and leadership, he was promoted from the enlisted ranks and commissioned as a Naval Logistics Officer.
He retired from the Navy after serving a total of 30 years of honorable service to his country. Hammond then pursued a civilian career with Georgia Pacific Corporation as a Procurement and Financial Manager. He retired a second time, in Florida, after 18 years with this company.
Hammond was an avid bowler and spent his remaining years in retirement traveling and participating in local and National bowling tournaments.
He is survived by: his wife of 62 years, married September 1, 1962, Hazel Meekins Cannon of Mardela Springs; two children: Craig A. Cannon of Wendell, North Carolina, and Tammy M. Cannon of Wendell, North Carolina; six grandchildren: Jaminez Bennett, Antoinette Cannon, Jade Cunningham, Craig Cannon Jr., Sheree Cannon, and Charlise Joyner; twelve great grandchildren; one sister: Debra Bonner; two brothers Richard (Phyllis) and Dane Bonner; sister-in-law, Joann Cannon; one aunt, Margaret Boston, several nieces, nephews, and a host of family and friends.
Hammond was preceded in death by two brothers; Wallace and Gary Cannon, and two sisters-in-law; Doris Byrd and Jaunesta Cannon.
