Harold was born on January 19, 1951, to Christopher and Betsy Vandiver on Cherry Point Marine Base in Havelock, North Carolina. He spent most of his childhood in Jacksonville, North Carolina, and graduated from Camp Lejeune High School in 1968.
After completing boot camp in Orlando, Florida, Harold proudly served his country in the United States Navy for 26.5 years, mainly as a flight engineer on the P3 Orion. He rose to the rank of Senior Chief and became the father of four wonderful sons.
In 1993, Harold decided to embark on a new career path in education. Having earned two bachelor's degrees while serving in the USN, he went on to earn a Master's degree in Education and became a teacher. Harold was very proud to be called National Board Certified. He spent most of his teaching career at two elementary schools, Swimming Pen Creek Elementary in Clay County and Hyde Park Elementary in Duval County, where he met his much-loved wife, Sharon Gittings Vandiver.
Harold was a man of many passions, including a love for his family, country, and the Navy. He was an avid traveler and experienced many different cultures and cuisines during his time in the Navy. He had a great appetite and was willing to try any food, no matter how unusual it may have appeared—or even if it moved on the plate. Harold was also a passionate U.S. history buff, a fan of musical theater, and an ardent admirer of the Beatles and Elvis Presley (with a soft spot for country and bluegrass). He had a contagious smile, a warm heart, a sense of humor, and was always ready to lend a helping hand.
Harold is survived by his beloved wife Sharon, his brother Frederick Ray Vandiver, his three sons, Adam Shawn, Carey Kris, and Daniel Harold Vandiver, as well as two grandchildren, Dylan Dunn and Ansley J. Young. He is predeceased by his brother Phillip Ray Vandiver, and his son, Derek Seth Vandiver.
His passing is mourned by his family, former students, friends, and colleagues.
A memorial service to celebrate Harold's life will be held at Riverside Presbyterian Church on Monday, April 3, 2023, at 11:00 AM.
Flowers may be sent on the morning of the service to Riverside Presbyterian Church at 849 Park Street, Jacksonville, Florida, 32204. The family suggests if making a donation in Harold’s name, please consider The Sulzbacher Center or Tradition House.
