
She was born in Reading, PA in 1955 and served in the United States Army from 1976 to 1982, and in the United States Army Reserves from 1982 to 1984. She was honorably discharged as a 2nd Lieutenant. Linda Joy was stationed with the 546th Ordinance Detachment at Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX before being deployed overseas to the 130th Station Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany. She returned to the States and was stationed with the 9th Infantry Division at Ft. Lewis in WA. While stationed at Ft. Lewis she completed Officer Candidate School, graduating in 1981. Linda Joy was awarded the Marksman Qualification Badge, Army Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon during her service. In 1984, she earned her Associate in Technology from the Computer Science program at the Ft. Steilacoom Community College.
Linda Joy enjoyed traveling across the country with her partner, Richard. She was a lifelong learner who had interests in technology, science, and the textile arts. Linda Joy was a former president and member of the St. Augustine Textile Arts Guild of St. Augustine. She enjoyed weaving, tatting, bobbin lace, knitting, and crocheting. Weaving was her passion in the last few years, using floor looms, tabletop looms, and inkle looms to make a variety of colorful textiles.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Charles and Delores Eager, and her longtime partner, Richard A. Schlegel, and is survived by her 2 children, Christopher, and Jacqueline, 6 siblings, Rose, Diane, Charles, Dennis, Jack, and Shirley, and 5 grandchildren, Drew, Alexandra, Aidan, Brian, and Cornelius-Jay.
A visitation for Linda will be held Saturday, July 26, 2025 from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM followed by a funeral service and committal service beginning at 11:00 AM at Hardage-Giddens Chapel Hills Funeral Home, 850 St Johns Bluff Road North, Jacksonville, FL 32225.
