Margaret Lackey Linder devoted daughter, caring sister, loving wife, and beloved mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother. Margaret was born May 27, 1931, the third child of 10 born to Marshall Lackey and his wife Maybelle Infinger Lackey, in Charleston, South Carolina. She was always industrious and hard-working. She was small but was an excellent basketball player in high school. She was unable to join the team as her family was poor, and she had to drop out of high school to help financially support them. She was a teenager when she met Leonard Linder, the love of her life, a young Navy Chief Petty Officer. They married and had 3 daughters and a son. They loved Navy life. After his retirement they settled in Jacksonville, FL. Their home was a welcoming place for family and friends. At the age of 40 Margaret achieved a long-delayed goal of finishing her high school education and earned her GED. She had always been a stay-at-home mom, much to her family’s delight. She was a wonderful cook, an excellent seamstress, and was always crocheting in her spare time, making beautiful Afghans for her children, and later for her grandchildren. She began a job outside of the home for the first time, working as a unit secretary for St. Vincent’s Hospital in Jacksonville for 2 years. Her husband developed early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease during that time. She resigned to become his full-time caregiver. After his death she went back to work as an ICU secretary at Methodist Hospital in Jacksonville and worked there until her retirement in 1993 at the age of 62. She spent most of her remaining years helping to raise several of her grandchildren, traveling the world with her sisters, and visiting vacation spots in the U.S. on her annual “Mother’s Day” trips with her daughters. In her late 80’s she developed dementia. She passed away peacefully at the assisted-living facility where she lived for almost three years, on Monday, June 23, 2025, at the age of 94.
There will be private family graveside service on Monday, June 30, 2025. It will be a celebration of the long, full life the Lord gave Mom that she wonderfully shared with us.
