Nettie Conner

Nettie Houston Conner, 92, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family at her home in Jacksonville, Florida on Sunday, November 20, 2011. She was born on December 26, 1918 in New Smyrna, Florida to Joseph S. Houston and Jeannette A. Daniels Houston.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and her large family was the joy of her life. Together with her husband, she was a founding member of Christ the King Catholic Church. She worked at State Farm Insurance until her retirement in 1980.

A proud mother, she was affectionately called “Grum” by her grandchildren and many other family members and friends.

Mrs. Conner was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Herschel Covington Conner, and her oldest son, Herschel Covington Conner, Jr. (Joan).

She is survived by her four younger children: Daniels Conner (Kathy) of Rochester, New York; Jeannie Schneider (John) of Southport, North Carolina; Gregory Conner (Daphne) of Miami; and Mark Conner (Carol) of Chestertown, Maryland. She had ten grandchildren: Herschel “Trey” Conner III (Angie), Kristin Zuppa (Chris), Nathan Conner (Gayle), Deirdre Conner (Larry Hannan), Corrie Conner (David Spielberg), Jeff Schneider (Megan), Danielle Conner, Tim Conner, Melissa Conner and Chris Conner. She had five great-grandchildren: Odessa, Aeden, Eli, Simon and Caralee. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Joyce Conner, Marion Houston and Lee Houston Weinert, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also loved by many friends and neighbors.

Services will take place on Friday, November 25, 2011. A viewing will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church, 742 Arlington Road North, at 10 a.m., followed by a Rosary Service at 10:30 a.m. Father Thanh T. Nguyen will officiate a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Internment will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery.
