While attending Middle Georgia College, Sylvia met Ronnie McKenzie, whom she married on August 4, 1962, and they began the journey of a special life together. They were blessed with daughters Rhonda, Rene and Lashan and sons-in-law Tim, William and Andrew who she loved as her very own. Over the course of time eight grandchildren –Beth, Ethan, Luke, Caleb, Zachary, Jacob, Jackson and Levi – and two great grandchildren – Pierson and Sophia – brought joy and happy noise to the family which was grounded in the love of this very special lady. The quiet, endearing smile of “Me-mommy” was a constant source of strength and encouragement to the family. She was a faithful and devoted pastor’s wife for over 40 years and her passion for children was made evident through the nurturing care she offered to each of her Sunday school pupils for more than 30 years. Her thoughtfulness, love and concern were a joy to all who had the privilege to know her. Her radiant smile will live on in our hearts and memories, reminding us how truly blessed we were to call her our wife, mother, Me-Mommy, teacher, and friend. Sylvia is also survived by a sister, Gayle Martin (and husband Jerome) of Greensboro, GA.; a brother, Richard (and wife Dottie) of Edisto Island, SC. She was the daughter of Rudolph and Ora Belle Hill, both deceased.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening, July 28 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at Kernan Boulevard Baptist Church.
A service in celebration of her life will be held at 11:00am, Monday July 29, 2013 at Kernan Boulevard Baptist Church with Rev. William Crook officiating. A graveside service will follow at Chapel Hills Memory Gardens.
Her husband and family would like to express their gratitude for the tremendous care she received for 21 days at McGraw Hospice.
