Sylvia Schuman Peterson

Born on October 9, 1937, in Jacksonville, Florida, Sylvia was the daughter of George Deward Schuman and Mary Lou Thomas Schuman. She graduated from Andrew Jackson High School and later dedicated many years to the U.S. Postal Service in Callahan, Florida. Sylvia’s life was one of deep devotion; to her faith, her family, and the simple joys that brought her happiness. She was a proud member of the First Baptist Church of Callahan, where her faith in Jesus remained her guiding light. Her walk with Jesus was a pillar of her strength. Sylvia married the love of her life, Russ Owens, on April 21, 2009. Together, they shared a beautiful love marked by tenderness, laughter, and unwavering care for one another.

She found joy in the beach where the waves soothed her soul, her shopping trips, and most of all, time spent with her family. Her laughter was contagious, and her warm presence made everyone feel seen, cherished, and at home. Sylvia is survived by her loving husband, Russ Owens; her cherished children Brian Swilley (Donna Swilley), Beverly Paxton (Lee Paxton), and Paige Minshew(Matthew Minshew). She was the proud grandmother of many, including Hollie Swilley, Ashley Swilley, Brittany Swilley, Heidi Hanks, Jake Hetzel, Rusty Minshew and Matti Minshew. Great Grandmother to Jakob Swilley, Christian Swilley, Dashawn Denney, Aaliyah Johnson, Mason Clark, and Marley Wanner, Magnolia Hanks, Marigold Hanks and great-great grandchild Kylah Todd. Welcomed in Heaven by her loving parents, Mary Lou Schuman and George Deward Schuman. As well as her loving grandson, Mason Clark.

Sylvia’s family will forever cherish the strength of her spirit, her enduring faith, and the love she so freely gave to those around her.

A visitation for Sylvia will be held Monday, April 14, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Callahan First Baptist Church, 45090 Green Ave, Callahan, FL 32011.

A Celebration of her Life will occur Tuesday, April 15, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Callahan First Baptist Church.
