Ed was educated in a one room school house in Kentucky. When he graduated from high school he determined he did not want to continue working in the coal mines and joined the U.S. Navy in 1939. Ed made a 20 year career in the Navy. He was trained as an electrician. Ed served in the Atlantic theater, the Mediterranean theater, and then moved to the Pacific theater during WWII. He also served in the Korean War. While stationed in Brooklyn, New York he met Susan Lias in 1941. When he returned from the war they married in 1946. They had two children, Walter and Kathleen and well as two grandsons, Hunter and Drew, and a great-grandson, Brody. Being in the military, Ed was away from his family for months at a time. He retired from the Navy and settled in Jacksonville. He continued working another 20 years at NAS Jax. Ed had a knack of making friends with wild animals. He regularly fed a family of raccoons who eventually became tame. He was able to pet them and they responded to his voice when he called for them. He was a kind man, always gave good advice, and was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
A graveside service will be held Friday, October 5, 2018 at Riverside Memorial Park, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL with full military honors. HARDAGE-GIDDENS RIVERSIDE MEMORIAL PARK and FUNERAL HOME is serving the family.
