Bruce Theodore Lessien, M.D. passed away in his home last Tuesday morning at age 84. Dr. Lessien practiced psychiatry for over 50 years in Oakland County, capping his career as Chief of Staff of North Oakland Medical Center. He attended Michigan State University and The University of Michigan Medical School, and served as a physician in the United States Army during the Korean War.
He was an avid gardener, loved sailing and tennis, all forms of art and music, and was a great student of military history. In the 1970s he lent his community-minded spirit to the founding of SEOVEC Vocational High School and volunteered as staff psychiatrist for Hotline Crisis Center and Common Ground. More recently he helped found the Harold A. Furlong American Legion Post 339, and took great joy in participating in Memorial Day parades. His passing so soon after this year’s Memorial Day will forever make the holiday dear to his family.
He is survived by his wife Susan, brother Warren, sister Nancy; children Michelle, Eric, and Greg; step-children Rebecca, Joseph (Kelly), David, and Matthew, and eleven grandchildren: Robert (Adriana), Ashley (Andrew), Erika, Allison, Anna, Karina, Karl, Hailee, Brian, MyaKoda, and Xavier, and great grandchildren Ruby, Violet, and Grace. He is preceded by his son Brian (Debby, Amanda, and Robert). He is also survived by many well fed birds, squirrels, and large houseplants.
