I am deeply saddened to learn of Carl’s passing.  He was a beautiful soul;  generous with his energy, his time, and his many talents.  He connected with my daughter through a shared love of poetry and with my grandson through a mutual love of music and song.  I am 
honored that Carl commissioned me to create paintings for Arbor Woods Egler, Arbor Oak, and the new condos, Sunrise and Sunset.  He was a joy to know, always welcoming.  My deepest sympathies to his sons and to all his family, friends, and to the Glen Arbor community.  May we find comfort in a higher power.

Bought this hat for Carl to protect his head from sun burn. Taken a few years ago on one of my annual working vacations at his houses.  Special memories that I will cherish forever. Miss you so much carl. Aunt P.

My wife Janet and I just heard today of Carl’s passing.
We are both shocked and deeply saddened.
We have been visiting Glen Arbor and specifically, Arbor Woods Oak since 2004, only missing a few years.
 We mostly dealt with Carl through phone calls and emails but had contact with him in 2015 when a terrible storm and straight line winds did extensive damage to the property.
 Carl was there quickly to start the cleanup and repair to get “The Oak” back to normal. We had to stay in Traverse City for several days, due to the amount of damage and the lack of electricity.
He did not hesitate to refund us for the week.
We also spent some time with him at his newest property at the old school which he loved showing off, but in a humble way.

We are so thankful for our time spent with Carl, especially during the past two years after he had lost his anchor. We were enriched by his love for music and poetry and enlightened by his political stance and work ethic.  But I think what I will miss most is his sense of humor and genuine good nature. He let each of his family members and friends know that we were important to him, and each of us will carry a bit of his light and energy as we treasure our memories and all the things he shared with us.

I love this picture of Carl and Nancy.  If my memory is correct, it was taken soon after Andy and Stephanie's wedding when they visited Glen Arbor and Frankfort.  Look how in love they were.  Carl was an amazing husband to Nancy.  Took such good care of her. 
Missing them both.

Such a wonderful husband to Nancy you were!  We loved sharing Nancy Day at the Detroit Zoo. 

Carl, You will be missed by the whole family.  There's a big whole in all our hearts. We shared many fun times together and we were looking forward to sharing so many more.  In our last conversation with you, we ended the call telling each other how much we loved one another. That gives us comfort to know we told you how much you meant to us!

Carl was a compassionate being that lived from his heart. Our families distance across the U.S. did not impact the closeness we all felt. I will miss phone conversations about progress on the school house renovation and hearing about the epic sunsets Carl took in on the lake. His shared love with Nancy of nature and animals was apparent.  Carl will be deeply missed and remembered ❤️

I am heartbroken for Andy and Carl who will always have my love and support. 

I have known Carl most of my life. He has always been the kind of person you can count on no matter what. Kind funny and hardworking, Carl was the very definition of a good man. I am so deeply saddened by his passing and will miss him always.

I'm Anne-Marie Oomen, one of the Beach Bards, and a writer. I was always so glad to see Carl at the Bards circle on those summer evenings. He was such a lovely soul, quietly contributing something clear and thoughtful, listening with his heart.  Once in a while, he would recite a poem I wrote years ago that he knew by heart. I can't tell you what it meant to me that he had taken the time to memorize one of my poems "Canoeing the Crystal River," and to recite it when he came to the bonfire circle.   Even now, I hear his soft voice saying it with such sensitivity and  concentration. I will very much miss that gentle integrity he brought to the words.  It was clear he felt the river sentiment of the piece--and the metaphor of it as well.  I've added the poem above. Perhaps knowing he had committed those particular lines to memory will bring some small comfort. I know you all must be bereft. He was a good man, and a tender friend to us all.  He will be deeply missed. My deepest condolences.  Anne-Marie 

I am grateful for that Carl taught Stationary Engineering to me as an apprentice.   Carl was dedicated to the Craft and put in the hard work that it takes to teach it.   Carl would use humor to help ease some of the stress we were all feeling due to the difficult licensing process we had to go through in order to:  operate, troubleshoot,  and maintain commercial and industrial steam and refrigeration equipment.  A good union man who lived the principal “ a good wage for a good days work”.   He advised us to stay away from goldbricks lest you become one. 


Special guy that was adored by many.  Grateful to have known Carl this past year in Glen Arbor!!  RIP
