

Hannelore Elisabeth Avery, 83, of Temple, Texas passed away surrounded by loved ones on February 24, 2023 at Scott and White Hospital. She was born on January 28, 1940 in Wurzburg, Germany to Franz Schafer and Erna (Stapf) Schafer.
Hannelore grew up in Bad Bruckenau, Germany a small town near Wurzburg. When she was old enough, she took many trips to Wurzburg and eventually moved there. She was a brilliant accountant and controller for several companies throughout her career. Hannelore had a lightning-fast touch on a 10-key calculator and was always eager to take on complex problems. Hannelore enjoyed studying tax laws, investing in stocks, and gambling at casinos in Oklahoma and Louisiana.
Her first accounting job was for Herr Greck in Wurzburg. She always spoke very highly of him and the everlasting impact he had on her. After meeting her future husband, Richard Avery, while he was serving in the United States Army, they married and moved to the States. They were married over a half century, with July 6th of this year marking their 60th anniversary.
Hannelore and Richard spent a few years in New Jersey and Germany before settling in Killeen, Texas in 1978. Hannelore started working for Maplehurst Dairy’s as an accountant where she was a supervisor and helped set up and code the first computer for the company. She met some of the best coworkers and lifelong friends here. She later worked for Art-Works as an accountant and helped double the company's size before they were bought out.
Hannelore and Richard had three wonderful children Richard Jr., Ralph and Renee. Hannelore had a strong personality and instilled some of her strengths in the kids. Her strong work ethic, honesty and laughter were passed down to them. She had a unique sense of humor that you might not understand if you weren’t around her long enough.
Hannelore loved Christmas and made it a very magical time for her family. She enjoyed the decorations, family time and gathering for Christmas Eve dinner consisting of steak fondue, fleish salad, cucumber salad and her white asparagus. Some of her other loves in life were going to the Opera, attending Willie Nelson concerts, dogs, birds and sports cars.
Hannelore is survived by her husband Richard C. Avery SR, her sister Liselotte Scholz (and family), three children Richard and wife Terry, Ralph and wife Gina and Renee and husband Craig, along with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be remembered for her brilliant mind, kind heart and independent spirit. Her loved ones will cherish the memories of her delicious cooking, her love for her family, and her eclectic personality.
The family welcomes you to join in Hannelore’s Celebration of Life on April 21, 2023 at 12:30 p.m at Crawford-Bowers, 1615 S Fort Hood Street, Killeen Texas, followed by her inurnment at the Ft. Hood Veterans’ Cemetery.
