Sharon Lea Robinson Reid was born to George S. Robinson and Arvazine Deering Robinson, baby sister of Robert George and Gloria LaZine, on April 24, 1949, in Wheeler, Texas, and left this life on November 11, 2025, in Temple, Texas. Sharon began life on the family farm in Twitty, playing alongside her brother, sister, and the many cousins who would come to visit each summer. The family moved into town—to Shamrock—when Sharon was eight, and her flaming red hair fit right in—a true Irish Rose.
A member of Shamrock High School’s Class of 1967, Sharon could be easily spotted on the football field twirling her baton in a blaze of green sequins, and in the band hall faithfully practicing her clarinet. Her spectacular performances at UIL solo contest foreshadowed a lifetime of musical pursuits. Always with a baton at the ready, Sharon became head twirler her senior year and performed at the NBTA twirling contest.
Sharon went on to play and twirl at McMurry College in Abilene, where she had attended summer band camps throughout high school. It was in McMurry’s Bynum Band Hall that she met the love of her life, cornet soloist Mike Reid. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a minor in speech, and later went on to earn a master’s in education administration and a counselor’s certification from Tarleton State University.
Sharon spent her lifetime teaching, first at Fleming Elementary in San Antonio, and then for 33 years in Killeen ISD: a third-grade teacher at Peebles and Pershing Park; fourth-grade teacher, facilitator, and instructional specialist at Sugar Loaf; and retiring as an instructional specialist at Duncan in 2004. She gathered lifelong friends along the way, who even in retirement continued to gather with their “lunch bunch.”
Sharon and Mike were founding members of the Heights Concert Band, where for 45 years you could easily spot Sharon’s distinctive crystal mouthpiece (not to mention the long red hair). They loved traveling on cruises, and Sharon could always be found supporting Mike at the bowling alley every Tuesday night and at any and every event of his choral pursuits with the Country Gentlemen, Notable Gentlemen, and Over the Hill Gentlemen. They built a true family of friends in the Killeen area, from neighbors to coworkers to Sonic carhops. In her retirement, Sharon could often be found at The Band Room, working as clerk, librarian, and seamstress.
Sharon was a lover of roses and irises, and a collector of cats (real-life ones), penguins (make-believe ones), Disney ornaments, and friends. She loved to quilt and spent years crafting alongside her quilting club, creating treasured quilts for her brother and sisters’ 50th wedding anniversaries.
Perhaps above all, Sharon treasured her nieces Aletha, Anita, Kefalari, and Melissia, and her nephew Torrey. She made sure that every girl had a baton from a young age and nurtured the musician within them all, whether it be on clarinet, flute, trumpet, or trombone. She loved each of her great-nieces and nephews (and even great-great-ones) with equal fervor.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents and husband of 35 years, Mike Reid. Left to cherish her memory are brother Robert Robinson and wife Glenda of Shamrock; sister Gloria and husband Russell Mason of Lorenzo, TX; niece Aletha and husband Steve Bentley of Shamrock; niece Kefalari Mason of Albany, NY; niece Anita and husband Mike Scarbrough of Bonham, TX; nephew Torrey Robinson and wife Tausha of Amarillo, TX; niece Melissia Mason of Troy, NY; seven grand-nieces and nephews and their spouses; eight great-grand nieces and nephews; numerous cousins; and a lifetime of friends, fellow teachers and musicians, and former students.
A visitation will be held at Crawford Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 15, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Sharon will be laid to rest alongside her parents at Shamrock Cemetery at a later date. The family suggests memorial gifts to McMurry University band or scholarship programs or to The Gideon’s International.
