Visitation for Windell Eugene Wood, 89, of Temple, will be 12:30-2:30 PM Thursday, January 21, 2021 at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home, 1615 S. Ft. Hood Road, Killeen. Graveside Service with military honors will be 3:00 PM Thursday, January 21, 2021 at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
Windell was born January 14, 1931 in Cisco, Texas to the late Elmer and Ura Mae Austin Wood. He was raised in Abilene and attended school there. He graduated Abilene High School in 1948 and 2 months later started taking flying lessons. He attended Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene and graduated with his Business Degree in 1952. In 1951, Windell joined the United States Air Force and became a Fighter Pilot of the F-86 Sabre Jet serving in the Korean War. During his time in the Air Force, Windell met the love of his life, Anease Bowman, and they were married March 5, 1955. He worked for Texas Instruments as a Material Control Manager for 35 years, retiring in 1991.
Windell enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, boating, camping, and was a pioneer water skier along with his Abilene friends famously named “The Troops”. There were many adventures with these life-long friends and their families especially at Lake Belton. He also enjoyed traveling and riding his motorcycle throughout the San Juan Mountains in Colorado.
Windell is survived by his wife of 65 years, Anease Wood; sons, David Wood and his wife Fay, Roger Wood and his wife Erika, and Keith Wood and his wife Tina; grandchildren, Cindy Preuninger and her husband Corey, Matthew Wood and his wife Caroline, Justin Wood and his wife Brooke, and Courtney Broussard and her husband Duke; 4 great grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.
