Avelino “Abe” Sablay Cayetano, age 79, passed away peacefully, from heart surgery complications on May 12, 2021, with his wife and 3 children by his side in the Michael E. Debakey VA Medical Center. Abe was a faithful man of God and an adoring husband to his wife, Eleanor “Noly”, of 53 charmed years. He was also a deeply caring father to his three children, Elane, Evelyn and Alvin and a generous Lolo to his five grandchildren Leo, Jaynie, Evie, Aaron and Faith. As Uncle Abe, he loved visiting with relatives all over the world and spreading his unselfish cheer and tireless smile. He relished in taking others out to eat to celebrate their birthdays, recitals, games, anniversaries or any happy event.

Abe led a successful career in the U.S. Army, serving 22 years, with tours in Georgia, Arizona, Thailand, Germany, and Korea until retiring as a Master Sargent Vietnam Veteran in Harker Heights, Texas. After Army retirement, he proudly delivered mail for the U.S. Postal Service in Austin and then Copperas Cove for 12 years before retiring permanently.

For many years, Abe and Noly led an active social life as members of the Filipino American Association of Central Texas. They celebrated many special occasions, created fond memories and made lifelong friends. As a couple, they were faithful churchgoers of St. Paul Chong Hasang Catholic Church and more recently of St. Martha Catholic Church in Kingwood.

Abe immensely enjoyed traveling with his wife, Noly after their retirement. They sailed on cruise ships to interesting destinations such as Aruba, Alaska, and Panama. They also journeyed with friends, church groups, and senior organizations to Egypt, Israel, China, and Russia. But above all else, Abe absolutely loved vacationing with his entire family. Disneyworld, The Caribbean, Los Cabos, Las Vegas, Canada, a Cayetano Reunion in the Philippines, Hawaii, and an unforgettable 9 day/7 state RV trip are just a few of the destinations that he generously financed for everyone’s enjoyment.

In 2018, Abe and Noly moved to Kingwood near their daughter, Evelyn, son-in-law Michael and grandson, Aaron. Their new home was close to the elementary school which enabled them to pick up Aaron and enjoy walks home with him. Soon after, it made sense to move in together. They found a dream home with a pool and enough room to accommodate all visiting family, relatives and friends. You could find Abe daily sitting in the morning sun next to the pool, eyes closed with his face toward God, and a smile of contentment on his lips.

Abe will be remembered for his steadfast love of God, his wife and family; his ever-present smile and laugh; and his wonderfully giving personality. Abe’s family and friends can take comfort in knowing that Abe loved deeply, lived life to the fullest, and was never afraid to take chances. Abe will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Avelino was a beloved coworker at the Copperas Cove PO. He was always cheerful and smiling. He was a gentle soul who never had a cross word with anyone. I remember greeting him in the morning, asking how he was, and he was always happy, especially since he had eaten his daily breakfast of oatmeal!! He’ll be missed, God rest his soul.

Lolo Abe was always very kind to us. When he'd visit us in Manila with Lola Noly, we'd show them around and have a great time with them. And they'd been kind to us also when we visited Texas in the last 15 years. His devotion to Lola Noly and their 53 years together is an aspiration that mot many can accomplish.

We will miss you, Lolo Abe.
