He was preceded in death by his parents Margaret and Bernard James Finch, Sr. Bernie was born and grew up in Chicago, which may explain his outgoing personality. He never met a stranger and loved to tell stories. Some were G-rated, most were not!
He attended Brother Rice High School in Chicago, before earning his bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University. After graduation, he started his first job at GATX. In 1980, he relocated to Houston where he would spend the rest of his career as a refined products broker.
Bernie (aka F21) loved to play golf and was a long-time member at Deerwood. He also enjoyed and was very good at detailing vehicles. Friends sometimes parked a dirty car in the driveway on purpose, knowing that “Berndog” would eventually wash it. This obsession led to him spending many hours in the yard, often shirtless!
He is survived by his former wife Elizabeth Montgomery; their 3 children, Ashley (Jeff) Dewar, Sarah (Jeff) Collins, and Matthew; siblings, Gail (Tom) Kohler, Merrilee (Jeff) Cirtwell; and 7 grandchildren, who affectionately knew him as “Peepaw”.
It was his wish not to mourn his passing. He will be cremated, and his ashes scattered at his favorite place. The family will have a private celebration of his life.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Golfers Against Cancer. GAC is a charity that was special to Bernie.
