

Bernard was born December 3rd, 1927 in Los Angeles, California, to Bernard Johnson and Margaret Reid. His father worked in the oil fields of Southern California and Bernie knew from an early age that was what he wanted to do as well.
He graduated in 1951 with a Master of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Southern California. After graduation he served in the United States Army during the Korean War in a Quartermaster Corps unit that tested petroleum products for use in vehicles of war. When he came home he went to work for the Richfield Oil Company in Los Angeles. He married Louise Carroll Kunz in 1953 and had two children, Christina and Matthew, before relocating to Kuwait with the American Independent Oil Company in 1966. He and his family spent nine years there, during which time he was able to fulfill his dream to travel the world.
He retired from petroleum engineering in 1987 in Kingwood where he bought and then ran the Kingwood Garden Center for nineteen years before retiring for good. He is survived by his wife, Louise, and his children, Christina, wife of Joseph Geldens of Kingwood, and Matthew, husband to Glenda Johnson of Katy. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Samantha Geldens, and Claire and Jennifer Johnson.
Memorial service will be at 11:00am on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at Kingwood Funeral Home. Interment will be at the Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038.
