Dick was born to Isabel and Richard Ghiselin in Dallas, Texas on August 29th, 1938. He was their only child and spent his childhood living in Dallas and Galt, Ontario in Canada. The family moved back to the Dallas area in 1952 and Dick’s father worked as the ROTC commandant for Highland Park High School until his death in 1954. Dick graduated from Highland Park High School in 1956.
After high school, Dick attended Texas A&M College in College Station, Texas, where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets and Ross Volunteers. He graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1960 and was awarded a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant, Armor division in the US Army immediately after graduation. He served as tank commander in Schweinfurt Germany during the construction of the Berlin Wall, then moved to Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia in 1964. Columbus was another turning point in his life as it is where he met then married Ann Sullivan on May 1st, 1965.
Following their wedding, Dick looked for a career outside of the military and found a company in Venice, Louisiana that recruited engineers. He was hired by Schlumberger Well Services in 1965 and began working offshore and started a career that would last 31 years. While balancing an offshore rotation assignment, Dick and Ann found time to have three children Laura, Richard, and Mike (two while stationed in Houma and the third during a stint in Houston, Texas). After moving back to Louisiana and settling in New Orleans in 1973, he continued working with Schlumberger and eventually managed the Schlumberger Learning Center in Belle Chase and later headed-up North American Marketing in downtown New Orleans. Dick and his family moved to Kingwood, Texas in 1986. His later years at Schlumberger were spent in the Marketing department at the Houston headquarters writing articles, creating ads and traveling the world to host trade shows. After he retired from Schlumberger in 1996, he continued to work at Hart Magazine and Qittitut Consulting while travelling with Ann in their free time.
Dick loved to spend his time with family, friends, colleagues, and former classmates. He could always be found at Kyle Field during football season cheering on the Aggies. The rest of the year, he travelled the world, visited friends, and worked as a class agent with the Class of 1960. Dick was a founding member of the Class of 1960 Aggie Rings for Veterans program.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Isabel, and by his wife Ann Sullivan Ghiselin in 2007. He is survived by his children and their spouses Laura Anne (Ghiselin) and Chris Buben of Kingwood, Amy and Richard Garrison Ghiselin III of Pearland, and Tara and Michael Sullivan Ghiselin of Kingwood. In addition to his children, Dick is mourned by eight beautiful grandchildren (Christopher, Bryce, Madisyn, Jonathan, Alex, Ryan, Kylie and Colin), his great-granddaughter Leia, his brother-in-law Dan Sullivan along with his daughters and their families, and his cousin Lois Hueston and her family in Canada.
Dick was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in late 2020 and it progressed rapidly while complicating his other health issues. He died surrounded by his loving and appreciative family as well as his caregivers at Northgate.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Aggie Rings for Veterans Program in Dick's honor. The Aggie Rings for Veterans Program provides class rings for veterans attending Texas A&M on government assistance following their service to our country.
