Steve was born in Walnut Creek, California on October 1, 1972, to his parents Rebecca (Becky) Dietrich and Steven Dietrich. In 1973, Steve’s family moved back to their home state, Texas, where Steve spent his early childhood in Kingwood, Texas. He enjoyed staying outside all day on his bike with his friends on River Falls Drive and Hidden Creek. He attended preschool at Kingwood United Methodist Church and Foster Elementary through fourth grade. In the summer of 1983, his family moved to Anchorage, Alaska. Steve enjoyed hiking, fishing trips, sailing in the Prince William Sound, snow skiing, building forts of snow in the cul-de-sac, and began learning to use his Apple II. In 1989, Steve returned to Texas and graduated from Kingwood High School in 1991.
With his father Steven Dietrich and grandparents Rose and Neville Hargrave attending The University of Texas in Austin, it was a family tradition to watch the Texas Longhorns play football. He enrolled at The UT at Austin majoring in Economics and after three years, he realized Economics was not his passion. While returning books to the university bookstore at the end of school year he was drawn to a book about Geographical Information Science (GIS) programs. Since UTA did not offer a GIS degree program, his research found that Texas State University offered this program. In 1996, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Cum Laude and a minor in Computer Science from Texas State University. While working, in 2006 he earned a Master of Science - Finance at the University of Houston.
Steve met his future wife, Tammy, when she recruited him for a new job. They were married in May, 2001 at First Presbyterian Church in Houston. Their first home was in The Heights, a historical neighborhood. On April 13, 2002, Elise Adele was born. Steve and Elise shared an affinity for music. Steve was a self-taught musician, first the piano and next the guitar. While Elise took piano lessons the first musical instrument they played together was the game, Guitar Hero. Fun memories were made when he played the piano with Elise, friends and family. Later he began learning and playing his guitar. As a family they enjoyed camping and skiing with friends as well as individual trips to Alaska, Hawaii, Europe and Roatan.
Early in his career he worked for Schlumberger, Pacific Trading Co, and Chase Bank. The longest tenure of Steve’s career was at PROS, a pricing optimization software company based in Houston, Texas. He was successful in many positions he held in his career at PROS from leading internal consulting teams and being the leading technical subject matter expert for the sales teams. Also, he led a 400-person technical organization focused on Research and Development, and was appointed Vice-President. His developed expertise, inquisitive nature, and unflappable presentation skills resulted in landing deals with large companies in the US and abroad. During his tenure he traveled extensively in the US as well as India, Australia, U.A.E. and many countries in western Europe.
Steve was part of the initial public offering of what became Houston’s largest publicly traded technology company and was at the New York Stock Exchange with his colleagues for “Ringing the Bell”.
Most recently, Steve made a decision to move to AI software companies such as TwinThread, Inc. where he was a Sales Executive selling AI Software to process /manufacturing enterprises. According to his associates, Steve was a mentor to many coworkers and was a consummate professional who always was well-prepared and polished, but it was Steve’s witty sense of humor and fun-loving nature that made his colleagues always look forward to collaborating with him. Steve formed many lifelong personal friendships during his career and the impact will be long-lasting.
Steve was a devoted son and father, known for his kind heart and deep love for those around him. He cared deeply for his family and was cherished and missed by all who knew him.
Steve entered eternal life and was met with love by family who had gone before him including grandparents Lois and George Dietrich and Rose and Neville Hargrave, and his brother-in-law Robert “Ben” Awalt.
Celebrating his life is his daughter Elise Dietrich, former wife Tammy Dietrich, both of North Carolina, mother Rebecca “Becky” Dietrich, father, Steven Dietrich, sister, Susan Dietrich Awalt, niece Ainsley Awalt among other aunts, uncles, and cousins.
