I met Sue when I came to Kingwood six years ago to visit her husband Don, whom I had known since the 1960s when I dated his daughter Donna. It was a wonderful two days of reminiscing and friendship, and I could tell why Donna did her best to bring Sue and her dad together. Don died a few months later, and now Sue--but I still have the memories of their happiness together, as well as printouts of Don's emails and Sue's cards and notes. RIP, Sue.

Growing up as friends and neighbors in Kingwood, there were many families on our block whose children played, went to school, and generally ran around together.  Many of those families parents acted as parents to us all, scolding us for misbehaving (or letting our parents know), praising us for good deeds and for our youthful potential.  The kids in our 2-block area in Kingwood were fairly close in age, and there were a lot of boys.  Consequently we all played street football, spotlight tag, went swimming, messed around in the ditch, and many other childhood activities.  It was a neighborhood that was safe, had big yards, and was made strong by the couples that decided to settle and raise their children there.

I will always remember what a sweet and warm woman Sue Boyd, Larry's mother, was to all the kids that ran like crazies through the Boyd house.  The level of chaos Mrs Boyd managed to smile through amazes me to this day.  She liked to bake, so there were always cookies, candies, and cakes that the boys with bottomless stomachs could grab as the went through and messed up her house.  They always had a menagerie of animals to play with.  Sue Boyd loved her animals.

There were times when each kid in our neighborhood would have small moments of time alone with Mrs Boyd (as with any of the community of parents in the block)… when, for example we would wait for Larry to get changed, or finish getting ready for some adventure we had planned.  I can remember the way Mrs Boyd would ask questions about my life, and my family… doing so out of genuine inquisitiveness and concern.  She always had something positive to say about any situation.  In all the years I knew Larry and his two younger sisters, I can't remember ever hearing a stern word come from that sweet ladys mouth.  She loved her children and raised them to be loving.

And so it is, with the deepest sense of warmth, I say to the family members left behind; Mrs (Sue) Boyd… you will be missed… you will be remembered… you will occupy a spot in my heart that you earned with your kindness… and you will always come to mind when I have challenges that test my anger.  I will try to remember how gracefully YOU handled trying situations, and hopefully will have some of your strength in those situations.

I commend you to God's loving light.
