Faulkenberry, Walter L. 94, native of South Carolina and long-time resident of Kingwood, Texas, died on April, 24, 2025 after having lived with cardiovascular disease for over 30 years. Born January 1, 1931, in Lancaster, South Carolina, Walt was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. School and the Military overlapped as he served 13 years Active and Reserve duty, from which he was discharged at the rank of Captain.
He began his career with Shell Oil Co. in Miami in 1961, working primarily in retail marketing. Over the years he moved his family nine times, retaining many lasting friendships in Roanoke, San Diego, Menlo Park, Fairfield and Tulsa.
Walt retired in 1993 in Kingwood, Texas. That year he became a founder of The Morning Rack at The Deerwood Club, where hitting two holes-in-one eased the pain of a slowly increasing handicap. Over the years he and his fellow golfers took many trips together in the US, Scotland and Ireland, playing such splendid courses as Turnberry, Carnoustie, St. Andrews, Kingsbarns, Gleneagles, and others.
Civic, charitable and community involvement was important to Walt. Contributions include serving on the Boards of Lake Houston YMCA and Kingwood Country Club. He was an Elder at First Presbyterian Church, Kingwood and a very active founding member of that church. He also served for over 12 years as an active volunteer of Operation ID, an outreach of First Presbyterian Church, Houston.
Much loved, Walt is predeceased by his parents Walter and Banche Faulkenberry, his wife of 49 years Elizabeth (Lib) Faulkenberry, his second wife Mary Jean Faulkenberry, his only sister Grace Fail, his brother Calvin Faulkenberry and stepbrother Jack Watkins. Walt was a loving husband, father, grandfather and frequently traveled to visit family members in addition to gathering all for the annual family reunion in Destin, Fl. Surviving family include his son John (Chip) and his wife Pattie and grandchildren Walter and Katie in Plantation Fl; son Robert, and his wife Terri and grandsons Hayes and Joshua of Aurora, CO; and stepdaughter Christine Miles and her husband Richard of Galveston, TX.
The family wishes to thank doctors William Winters, Jr., William Spencer, Jimmy Frank Howell, John Buergler and Thomas Baxter for the excellent care of the past 27 years. The list would be incomplete without recognizing the early work and wisdom of the late Dr. E Lillo Crain, Jr.
Visitation will be held at the Kingwood Funeral Home on May 7, 2025 at 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorial Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 5300 Main Street, Houston, TX 77006 on May 8, 2025 at 11:00 AM. Interment at Memorial Garden, Shandon Presbyterian Church, Columba, SC.
