He happily married Marilyn Ann (Susie) Duke in 1969 and had three wonderful sons with her: Kal Deep married to Yolanda, Kyle Deep married to Kristy, and Kam Deep married to Jara. Blessed with grandsons Ethan Alex, Gavin Austin, Kieran George Alex and granddaughter Kassia Finola Marilyn Deep. His beautiful loving wife Susie predeceased him in August of 2006 before their golden years dreams could become a reality, taken by Alzheimer's Disease. He looks forward to being with her again with those dreams of being together, now for an eternity as the Alzheimer's took two lives with her loss.
Al's character and influences were rooted in the downtown core area of Windsor, where the Windsor Casino presently sits. He was a great fan of Harness Racing.
Al served as a past member/secretary and president of the then newly formed KW Civitan Club during '65 - '70.
He served as president and executive member of the Kitchener NDP during the Morley Rosenberg and Max Saltzman era. Al's political interests continued, serving as Provincial and Mayoralty Campaign Manager for Ted Isley, during the time that NDP was establishing itself as an alternative influence to the other major political parties. He had no real political party affiliation as he aged because he found similar power faults in all three political parties.
Al's teaching career varied from the beginning in Spragge, Ontario, Windsor Public and Separate Schools and in Anderdon Township before coming to Waterloo County in 1962 to begin his teaching career in Waterloo Township Area 1 schools before amalgamation towards the Waterloo County School Board.
He was active in coaching Senior School Basketball at Courtland Senior Public under Principal Bill Taylor, and served as coach and executive member in Woolwich Minor Hockey, Softball and Soccer leagues supporting his sons.
He eloped Easter Weekend 1969 with Susie after her Sunnyside Team won the basketball game over his Courtland team by two points. But victory was Al's as he married one of their prized Sunnyside teachers, Susie, after the game that weekend!
As an educator and Principal, he served on numerous committees, Principal's Conference and Professional Development Committees and taught a Parenting Program under Katherine Bosche. His greatest educational times were in the City Core Schools as VP to Brock Foster at Laurentian PS and past Principalships of Pine Grove, Maple Grove, Grandview-Preston and downtown Floradale. Al finished his Principal career at Margaret Avenue Senior and Courtland Senior Public Schools, his two favourites because of the Senior School age challenges. He completed the WCSB Supervisory Officers program.
Al always felt that if he would not feel comfortable having his own sons in his schools or classrooms, then he would make the necessary changes.
Al's life was greatly influenced by the written words of The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran and as a parting wish would encourage all to read it for personal and family support in this complex world we've given our children, in the name of Peace and Hope. He worked and played hard and does not apologize for that.
... and from Al: "Now it is final ... eternal happiness being with Susie again. She was my pillar and the best partner that entered my life. I have so wished to be with her again as living without her was too much to deal with. Therefore, I depart in great Happiness."
Cremation has taken place and a private time of remembrance has been held by immediate family. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations would be appreciated to the Waterloo Wellington Regional Cancer Program, the Sunnyside Foundation, the Alzheimer Society of Waterloo Wellington, or to a charity of your choice. His remains will be placed alongside his beautiful wife Susie at Williamsburg Cemetery.
God bless the poets, florists, song lyricists, and our sons for strengthening our love through the years. Our best times would have been in our golden years, free to enjoy life together travelling and time spent with our grandchildren. That was interrupted with Susie's death, but now we are together again with a real marriage made in Heaven.
