It's already been a year since you went to be with Jesus. I hope you know I miss you and how much you meant to me. Not a day goes by when you are not in my thoughts , I love you and miss you.

Goodbye, Oma. I'll always remember your big hugs and endless bags of goodies and the obvious fondness in your voice whenever I'd call or visit. I'll never forget how loved I felt by you. Hearing others speak about you all week makes me wish I'd known you more as a person in addition to knowing you as an oma; it sounds like you were a remarkable one in ways I never really knew. Thank you for all the memories and experiences. I'll miss you.

Eulogy

As the story goes…
When Peter walked Emmy home one evening after a dance party he asked her to “go steady.” Emmy told him she had to think about it and he should come back in one week to get his answer. In the middle of the week Peter returned, hoping to get an answer sooner but she informed him that it had not yet been a week, a week would be on the weekend. He had to walk the 5 kilometers home again without an answer.  Peter and Emmy were married 2 months later and shared their lives for the next 63 years. They had 11 children, 20 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

Emmy was a beloved wife, mother, Oma, and Uhr Oma.

If I had to pick only one verse to describe Emmy, it would be Eccl. 9:10: “And whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” Emmy Ritzmann was a worker, and whatever she did, she worked hard and she worked well, always doing her best as “unto the Lord”.

Emmy was a young girl when she lost her own mother while in a concentration camp in Yugoslavia. At 12 years old she took responsibility for her younger siblings becoming as a mother to them, God already preparing her for all the children she would have.  Three years in such a place does take its toll, yet Emmy was strong and resilient.  It was shortly after that she married Peter. Life was tough as they continued to live under the oppression of war-torn Yugoslavia where Emmy gave birth to and then lost her first-born daughter, Emily.

Following the birth of their second child, Peter, the family was finally able to leave Yugoslavia, to stay in a refugee camp in Germany where young Peter passed away.  Two additional children were born in Germany before there was talk of following Peter's mother and sisters to Canada. Thus in 1957, with 2 suitcases and 2 young children they headed for a new life in the unknown.

The biggest change aside from the need to learn a new language in a new land was church. Peter and Emmy began to regularly attend the church of Peter's family and Emmy's Grandmother, the Apostolic Christian Church (Nazarean). Soon both committed their lives to the Lord and were baptized. Here began Emmy's deep and growing faith; an unwavering faith that sustained her through the ongoing trials and hardships that life can bring.

As the Lord began to restore the years the locust had eaten, 5 sons and 2 daughters were added to the family. Though Emmy had her hands full with the care and feeding of her growing family, still she needed to work outside the home in order to help make ends meet. 

Despite the challenges and struggles of a large family, she deeply and completely loved each of her children––going out of her way many times to help the one hurting. Doing her utmost even as she gracefully aged to make peace with each of them to make sure that even if they were fighting with one another, her own heart was reaching out to all of her children with love, understanding and support.

As the years went by, the children started families and adventures of their own,  taking them near and far. Emmy made it a priority to travel and continue to know and support each of her children. The “vacations” she and Peter took became missions of outreach to their children as they lovingly reached out and dug in with projects of repair and renovation, the cooking and baking, and whatever else Emmy felt needed to be done. (Emmy was already pushing 70 when she convinced one of her daughters that it would be “fun” to paint the outside of their house during one of their visits!) 

She delighted in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who knew and adored their Oma and Uhr-Oma. Somehow she knew how to love each one as if he or she was the only one.

Emmy loved all people. She saw needs in other and helped in any way she could. No one stayed a stranger. She loved to give handmade gifts and baked goods or just encourage others with a hug or smile or hand squeeze. She liked to share her experiences with others and would give the clothes off her back if she felt they needed it more than her. Always welcoming and loving on them whether extended family, church family co-workers, or neighbors.

A fighter to the end, Emmy battled cancer for 8 years, consistently exceeding the doctors expectations. Armed with her strong faith and love of music her focus went to her Savior and eternity. Her longing turned towards going home to be with Jesus––to her eternal rest. Where there are no sorrow or tears. And where pain is no more. To reunite with loved ones gone before. To spend her days at peace, worshipping her Savior and singing with the angels.

This was Emmy––strong, courageous, generous, creative; full of energy and excitement for life; an incredible friend and encourager. We love her much and will miss her deeply.

Cooking baking especially Christmas cookies.Always enough to go around no matter how many more packages needed to be sent out.As the years went by the packages got smaller as the numbers grew.But I believe as the number of grandchildren grew so did the love in making each and every one.You loved us all equally no matter what road in life we chose to go down.You are with your other children now it is there turn to feal and enjoy your LOVE.Enjoy them and don't worry about us in time we will be fine.

Oma loved us all soo much.  She took all her grandkids to experience African Lion Safari where she would drag Opa with each kids visit and spend the day going on the same tour feeding the same monkeys and getting licked by the same Giraffe…who was really starting to take a shine to her.  Oma didn't stop there she took  us to Niagara falls to see many sites and then another full day at Marine land. Even enjoying some of the rides herself. She was so happy just seeing us having fun!   
Whenever we think about Oma we can't help but think about her delicious home cooked meals, they were always prepared with her kids favorite desserts which she would have throughout the house.  There was never just one.  It was like she just knew who was coming and what they loved.  From her unforgettable chocolate chip cookies, to fruit squares, salz kipfel, almond cream cake, poppy seed cake, potato soup, cabbage rolls, stuffed peppers, roladen….ok, so we could on for hours but don't want to make you all hungry.  Oma baked us cookies, muffins, squares, strudels, cakes for birthdays and for weddings and for just because we were coming to visit.  Christmas was made because of her loving kindness to us all, handcrafting dresses for the girls and tea towels and washcloths and if you were extra good the whole year round Oma would send you a GREAT BIG BUNDLE of her most adored Christmas Cookies.  We would all gather at her house over the holidays and fill the living room, basement and kitchen, all agreeing that Omas cookies were the BEST part of the holidays!
Oma taught us many things from perfecting the favorite recipe, to fixing a funny stich, to helping getting rid of pesky critters to many other remedies and home concoctions that only a wise and experienced mother would know.  She was always willing to lend a helping hand… in raising the children, cooking the meals, renovating the homes, building a garden, or entertaining/catering/celebrating a big life event .  Oma was always there…and in a really big way.  She was tremendous support to so many of us and always exceeded any expectation.  Oma was WONDERFUL!  If our Oma would have worn lipstick all her kids, grand kids and great grandkids would have faces covered with lip prints.  She loved beyond motherly possibility.  Oma's love was Divine.

I had the pleasure of working with Emmy at Grand River Hospital.  She was a lovely person and a hard worker.  My condolences to her family.

Terri  So sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. I remember her from when your family lived nearby when we were kids.

Ich und Elfriede sowie Klaudia und Uwe mit Ihren Kindern denken an dich und wissen, dass deine ganze Familie bei dir sein wird und ihr euch gegenseitig Trost und Kraft gebt.
