Ivy Monica Bartley

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, George Bartley, and her three children, Chris, Carol and Nigel; her five grandchildren, Luke, Angie, Katie, Sherrie and Ashley; and her two great-grandchildren, Chloe and Malina.

She was a child during WW2 in England and her stories of living through the war were harrowing. From being evacuated from home to the countryside, the rationing, fearing air raids to sleeping in bomb shelters, it was not an easy beginning to her life.

She married George Bartley on September 6th, 1952, and they lived in various parts of England until the family immigrated to Canada in 1969, to the remote town of Thompson, Manitoba. From there the family moved to Mississauga and then to Beaconsfield QC. In 1993, George and Ivy retired to Orangeville where they built their dream bungalow and gardens. Their final move was to Conestogo to be closer to their daughter, Carol.

She spent a large part of her life volunteering at nursing homes and helping others in general. She was the Mom who was always available to drive her kids and their friends around to football games or wherever needed. She was like a second mother to her children’s friends. Her baking was savoured by family and friends and she was especially well known for her apple pies, chocolate cakes and scones. Friends were always welcome for the traditional Sunday dinner of roast beef with Yorkshire pudding.

One of her favourite pastimes was knitting. She lovingly taught her granddaughter, Katie, how to knit and they spent Sunday mornings together for many years forging a special bond. We all have many items that she made with love and when she wasn’t knitting for us, she tirelessly made hats, mittens and scarfs to donate to homeless shelters or whoever needed them. She was an avid reader and loved reading novels based in England set around the early 1900s.

She is missed tremendously by her family, friends and neighbours. She lived to help others and her love will always be with us in our hearts and memories.
