Reverend John Douglas Schweyer, known to family and friends as Doug, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and devoted servant of God, passed away on November 29, 2025. Born to Elmer and Elva (née McKenzie) Schweyer, Doug dedicated his life to faith, family, and service. He is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce (Breitzman), and their four children: Robin Welsh (Paul), Scott Schweyer (Diane), Paul Schweyer, and Kitty Schweyer (Ryan). He cherished his grandchildren—Cameron, Madeleine, Spencer, Carly, Troy, Nicholas, Jessica (Mauricio), Carlie (Jordan), and Erin—and delighted in his great-grandchildren, Greyson, Orellana, and Augustus. He is survived by 3 sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Schweyer as well as by several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Once he was ordained as a Lutheran Pastor, Reverend Schweyer served congregations across Ontario for close to 60 years. He attended college for 2 years in Milwaukee, Wisconsin 2 years
in Fort Wayne, Indiana and 4 years at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis Missouri, later also completing his Masters of Divinity from Concordia. Known for his deep compassion and unwavering commitment to making God’s love tangible in the world, he challenged conventional thinking when needed, championed the poor by transforming underused church properties into affordable housing, and actively supported Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) and other organizations that extended aid and opportunity worldwide. He inspired countless people through his sermons, counsel, and dedication to living his faith through action. Doug’s devotion to family was profound. He encouraged each of his children to follow their own paths, celebrated every milestone of his grandchildren, and treasured family gatherings, particularly the annual Schweyer family reunions and holiday celebrations filled with laughter and connection. He and Joyce were adventurous companions, taking the family on extensive summer road trips across North America and Europe, and later exploring the world through annual cruises, always returning with stories, ideas, and a broader understanding of life and humanity.
Reverend Schweyer’s life was a testament to love, service, and curiosity. His presence, wisdom, and joy will be deeply missed, but his legacy lives on through his family, his faith community, and all whose lives he touched.
A time for visitation and the funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hamilton (232 Fennel Avenue East). Visitation will begin at 12 noon with the
service to start at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to a charity of your choice.
