John, our dear brother in law, was a very unique man.  He always made you feel welcome and showed an interest in your life. Family dinners were always memorable with his quick wit. We always had a sing song at Christmas and out would come the harmonica and the toe tapping!He was a very caring  individual, belonging to the RotaryClub in the past,  volunteering at the hospital and showing kindness to all. He was a wealth of knowledge due to his curiosity and love of history and geography. His poems tell you the kind of man he was. You will be missed John, much love Ken & Josie xoxox

Indeed it could be a fun, adventurous, and interesting time with John on outings with him - and a learning experience because of his knowledge.

I remember going once with John, Jennifer, Philip, and Becky from the trailer at Flesherton to where he had his boat at Meaford - but the gas tank was showing empty. Up and down the country hills we drove. We got to the gas station running on fumes. Had John been concerned? No. He had a carefree spirit and carried a trust that drove him forward to getting to that gas station, and even if the car had stopped and stalled along the road, it was okay. 

Years ago John would always greet me with "Shalom sister!", and today I say to the memory of John, "Shalom brother!"

There are so many wonderful memories and fun stories about Uncle John - many of them involved an interesting or unusual fact he had learned (perhaps from one of his walking adventures or talking to strangers). I admired this quality of finding something on his walk and wrapping a story around it. His curiosity made for interesting conversations and that sense of humour …. Always a laugh.  

You will be missed Uncle John. We will continue your stories by telling others, and remembering to be curious and to notice the little things in life.

I have so many special memories of you, from encouraging me (at 5 years old) in Nova Scotia to try eating clams with a spoonful of hot melted butter, to teaching me how to fish for wide-mouthed bass at Lake Eugenia, to watching you proudly play the bass drum in a parade, to enthusiastically playing the harmonica at all family get together where Dad was playing guitar and we were all singing, to you throwing in a hockey term at every family dinner - "Shoot me the salt there Mel!", to reciting your poems, your fantastic sense of humour, your heart full of love.

So sorry to hear of John's passing.  He was a unique, caring, sensitive man who could turn any topic into a work of  poetic art.  He loved hockey and played an inspired game with his mantra of  “No defensive zone coverage” which was often correct.  John was always interested in others and their background.  He was the only person I met who knew my village Cargill, was once called Yokissippi.  He came to our hockey gatherings and recited his poem of Hanging them up” flawlessly even though his memory was being challenged.  Johnny ‘Reb’ is missed and our sincere condolensces go to his families and friends.    Rest in Peace John.

What a gem of a man, husband and father John was! Al and I will remember him with a smile and cherish all the fun times (sometimes way too much fun) over the years. I  have fond memories of going to St Marys and having him guide me to where I needed to be for an appointment.  John has an army of family and friends who will dearly miss him. Condolences on behalf of the remaining members of the Oleschuk family.

Mom and Dad met John & Judy in the 
mid-1970’s, when they moved to Nova Scotia,  and immediately became lifetime friends.

We “kids” got to know them very well.  For a number of summers we all spent one week of summer vacation on PEI and boy-oh-boy did we have fun.  John led the campfire songs, of which he knew many.  He was the biggest “kid” around campfire.  He got us all wound-up!

Over the years, John & Judy, Mom & Dad played cards often and enjoyed adult beverages, conversation and meals  together.

What a sweetheart John was -  loving, caring , a wonderful Dad.
He brought our work Christmas parties to life! Our fondest memory of John is in the piano bar in Nassau, singing and watching him and Ken play the instruments when the band was on a break - so funny!
