We grew up playing together on his parents farm in the barn and down by the river.
Later we took road trips to the Chicago area to visit his parents.

Good afternoon everyone.  My name is Melissa, I’m known as #2.  To those that were familiar with his ways, my dad was all about efficiency and he thought that rather than remember our names, he would remember our position in the family.  He would introduce us as such which would make some people chuckle.   Our Aunt Ruthanne always mentions the first time she met us.  She lives two doors over from my parents’ house and we met her in 1985.  My dad said “These are my kids.  That is #1, #2, #3, and #4 – pointing at us as he did the introduction.”  Horrified, she told him that was no way to introduce his children.  He found this hilarious and chuckled even harder when she then asked us “What does your mother call you?”
As we grew up, he began to associate us with what we did.  When we met a friend or colleague of his, he would introduce us by our names.  That person would usually look at us with some confusion.  That is, until dad would add our role in life.  I became “Melissa the police officer from Toronto”.  My older sister was the one with the two kids, Barb was the one in China, and Sarah planted trees.  But he was proud of each of us and he would beam as he would introduce us or give our updates to his friends.  
There are four of us.  Growing up, I remember hearing the same story over and over.  He would tell it to pretty much anyone he met for the first time.  He would start out saying that when the first daughter was born, he bought a shotgun.  When the second daughter was born, he bought luggage.  When the third daughter was born he bought three ladders and when the fourth daughter was born, he bought name plates for all the windows.  This story would always make people chuckle – and boy did he like to make people laugh.  
He also liked to tell everyone all about how Stormin’ Norman’s firewood was a well oiled machine.  Well, this machine consisted of four young girls processing  and delivering firewood with him every free weekend, holiday, and P.A. day.  We did not choose to be there and at the time we did not want to be there.  There was no negotiation.  We spent many, many hours at the woodpile.  He would wake us early in the morning singing “good morning Mary sunshine...” – I learned to hate that tune.  He would then pack a nutritious lunch of hotdogs, and apples.  We would then load up the truck and head off to the woodpile where our adventures would begin.   As much as we didn’t want to go there, once we got started, we always had a fantastic day with dad.  His cheery mood and abundant energy kept us moving and he would crack his cheesy jokes just to get our smiles.  By the time we went home, the woodpile wasn’t that bad.  It wasn’t that bad, until the next morning.  
My dad was larger than life.  He was my dad, my mentor, my protector, and my friend.  He was someone that I could go to with any problem, and he could fix anything.  When I was little, it was my skinned knees, when I was growing up, it was my math problems – and most teachers couldn’t understand how I came up with some of my answers,  then it was my car, then it was my career.   He always encouraged me away from policing.  I remember him telling me it was a thankless job with many complications.  However, when I was accepted by the Toronto Police Service, there wasn’t a prouder man.   From then on, he always looked forward to my stories, my complaints, and my accomplishments.  His voice would be full of pride everytime we spoke.  Having been in my shoes, he always had his unique perspective on all things related to policing.  
Many of you know my dad as a strong, proud man.  He was.  He helped to set us each on a course in life that brought us to where we are today – and I wouldn’t change mine for anything.  I cherish every minute I had with my dad.   I am what I am because of my parents and although he is no longer with me in body, my dad will always be in my heart.  I love you dad and you are always on my mind.

After not seeing Norm for a few years, and then just recently at Uncle John's memorial, I actually commented to my dad about how Norm had not changed at all since the last time I saw him. And in our breif conversation, how he so effortlessly made us all laugh.

Shock dose not come close to how i felt 
when i heard of normans passing,and sadly to say the days now will be a little less brighter and the knights will go on a little bit longer, i know it seems hard to 
believe,but a time will come soon where you can start to feel a healing of sorts,then youll know everything is going to be ok.I know this because i also lost my soul mate suddenly and unexpectly.

We are very sorry for your loss.  Norm was a wonderful man and he will be missed greatly.

Such a fully lived, loved and loving life! An inspiration for sure.

Norm's take on life's situations was unique. Whenever we talked he could always make me laugh. Now his memory will always bring me a smile. He will be missed. Please accept our condolences.

I am so sorry to hear of Norm's sudden passing and for your loss of your true love.

We worked for a short period together on the 3rd floor peadiatric unit-I am still working night shift!!

Cindy & I just learned of Norm's passing and offer our deepest sympathy to you and your family.

We knew Norm to be a man of true character and we will miss him! He had helped us many times since we moved to Mannheim.

He was also quite the character and always offered a uniquie "Norm" perspective of things which always made me smile in the many times he would just drop over to shoot the breeze!

When we first met, I am sure a few heads turned when he frequently stopped over at the house in the cruiser and talked for extended periods!

Dear Kris and family,

We are still in shock and saddened by your loss.  Over the past few days we have been reflecting over the many memories that we have of Norm during the years that we have known him at Playa Maya.

We remember with fondness his detailed and funny story about how you both raised homeless racoons and how that grew into a rather large family.  We can visualize Norm walking down the beach with his walking stick and wearing his straw hat, with you at his side.

We will miss him as a friend but will always treasure these and many other memories of a wonderful person.

I will always remember when he stayed with us as a rookie on the Toronto Police force. We had a good time "experiencing Toronto".

   Norm and I worked in the " Burg " for several years and had some good times . You could always count on Norm to be there if you needed him even if he was still wearing his fur hat in the summer . I will miss him .

I  will also remember Norm as a BIG Man with even a BIGGER heart, who had always put others before himself. My sincere condolences on Norm's passing.  I recall his pride upon watching his daughter receive her badge and awards at the swearing in ceremony in Toronto.  I'm sure he felt the same about all his children and grandchildren.  He will be missed.

Norm was a "Mountain of a Man" with a happy demeanor. When he spoke of Kris or the four girls, his eyes lit up. He would tackle any assignment with enthusiasm. I will miss him.
