

Thompson, Andrew J. "Jack" — age 89, of Powell, left to be with the Lord May 7, 2011. He was a member of Powell United Methodist Church. Born in Hickman County, June 7, 1921, on a farm near Centerville, Tenn., he was a graduate of Murray State University, majoring in math and physics. Jack was a World War II veteran, serving three years with the Navy’s 17th Seabee Battalion in the Pacific Operations. He worked all his adult life for Union Carbide nuclear and Martin Marietta engineering divisions; being involved in plant expansion programs at K-25, Paducah, Ky. and Portsmouth, Ohio, and duties associated with X-10 and Y-12 as a member of Central Engineering. Jack loved golf and enjoyed playing well into his eighties. He was an avid reader and worked crossword puzzles daily. He made friends easily and was loved dearly by so many. Preceded in death by parents, Goodrich and Betsie Thompson; brothers, Harry, Clayton, Horace and wife Annie Lou, Marvin and wife Grace, sister Mary Baker and husband Bennie; and brother-in-law Harder Maddox. Survived by his loving wife, Irene, the joy of his life and eternal love mate; stepson, Stephen Gentry and wife Lisa; sons, David Thompson, Atlanta; Steve Thompson and wife Pat, San Francisco; daughter, Carol Wood and husband David, Santa Barbara, Calif.; granddaughters, Lindsay Kellams and Ashley Wood; great-grandchildren, Charlotte Rose and William Augustus Kellams and Audie Mae Wood; sister, Irene Maddox and several special nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends, 5-7 p.m. Thursday, at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel, 2300 W. Adair Drive. A memorial service with honor guard will follow, with pastor G. W. Boles officiating.
