

Alba Jo (Karcher) Guffey, age 76 of Harlingen, Texas, went to be with our Lord on Thursday, December 20, 2018. “Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and his courtswith praise.” Ps. 100:4 ESV. Jo was born April 21, 1942 in Brenham, Texas to Albert H. (Dutch) and Helen N. (Bage) Karcher Jr. Jo graduated from Edinburg High School and attended A & I College (Texas A & M) in Kingsville, Texas where she met the love of her life, James F. Guffey.
Jo’s love for choral music began with singing in her high school choir in Edinburg Texas and continued as she sang with her church choir as well as with the South Texas Chorale in Harlingen. She passed on her love of singing to each of her children and lovingly supported their musical endeavors.
Jo was employed by the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Word Processing for over 27 years.
Jo greatly enjoyed spending time with family, especially her children and grandchildren-she and Jim traveling many a mile to visit loved ones.
Over the years, Jo lovingly gifted family members with personalized crocheted afghan throws; numerous, beautifully detailed needlepoint framed art and countless pairs of crocheted house shoes.
Jo is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years James “Jim” Guffey. They married July 29, 1961.
Jo is also survived by her son James (Jimbo) Guffey of Houston, Tx; daughter Janna L. Preston of Richardson, Tx. and daughter Joyce H. Butler and son-in-law Dan Butler of Fort Worth, Tx. Grandchildren include Jillian Price, Jordan Price, Jaycie Preston and Phillip Preston II and one great grandchild Elijah Wayne.
The family is thankful to Dr. Todd Shenkenberg MD for his compassionate care over MANY years and the Valley Baptist Medical Center Chaplains for their loving support during Jo’s battle with cancer. Also, to Dr. James Castillo, Kindred Hospice and The Cano House #3 staff who cared for her as well.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 23, 2018 from 3:30-5:00 pm. With a Celebration of Life Service at 5:00 pm. at Heavenly Grace Funeral Home in La Feria Texas. In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made to a charity of your own choosing.
