Born on December 8, 1940, in Mapleton, ND, Daniel was the son of Steve and Hulda McKinnon. He grew up on the family farm in Mapleton, where he learned the values of hard work, perseverance, and a strong connection to the land. Daniel was a proud graduate of North Dakota State University (NDSU), where his passion for Bison football began, a love he carried with him throughout his life.
Daniel proudly enlisted in the North Dakota Army National Guard, where he served with honor.
On May 28, 1971, Daniel married Marlene McKinnon, the love of his life. Together, they were blessed with three daughters: Lori, Dawn, and Shannon. The family flourished under Daniel’s devoted care, and he cherished the time spent with his girls as they grew up.
Daniel had a long and successful career in the banking industry, working in the Fargo area before retiring from Dewey County Bank in Timberlake, SD, in 2004. His work ethic and commitment to his profession earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and clients alike.
Following his retirement, Daniel and Marlene moved to Devils Lake, just outside of Perham, MN, where they enjoyed a peaceful life by the lake surrounded by family and friends. The couple also spent their winters in Weslaco, TX, where they made countless memories with friends and fellow Winter Texans.
Daniel was an avid fan of football, particularly NDSU Bison football. He also enjoyed his trips to the casino, his daily Sudoku puzzles, and watching his favorite westerns. His presence at the lake will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Daniel is survived by his loving wife, Marlene McKinnon; his daughters Dawn McKinnon (Chris Johnson) and Shannon Dye (Shawn); his son-in-law Joel Lindgren; his grandchildren Darby Cervenka (RJ), Mckenzie Dye (Braeden Wanzek), Sydney Dye, his great-grandchildren Cal, Lyla and Mara. Daniel is also survived by many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents Steve and Hulda McKinnon; his daughter Lori Lindgren; and his sister Barbara Polum.
Daniel Stevenson McKinnon will be deeply missed by his family and friends, but his love for life, his commitment to family, and his sense of humor will live on in the memories of all who were lucky enough to have known him. May he rest in peace.
A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.
