

September 11, 2017 at the age of 93, Edward Rexford McKinney passed away.
He was preceeded in death by his parents: William Claude and Margaret Elizabeth McKinney as well as his brothers and sisters: Floy Norwood, Oleta Doughty, Gwen "Sis" McDonald, Robert Mckinney, Garland McKinney, Dorthy Pinkston and Don McKinney.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruthelyce McKInney who was the love of his life. His children are: Claude McKinney, Jan Zimmerman, and Jeanie Gordon. He had four grandchildren: Natalie Ray, Tom Gordon, Bill Gordon, and Kristina Zimmerman. He also had seven great grandchildren: Natalie, Brooklyn, Frankie, Presley, Thomas, Spealler and Hepner.
Ed was born in Montague County, Texas on January 12, 1924. He grew up on a farm in central Texas during the era of the dust bowl and the great depression. His family then relocated to the Rio Grande Valley in the 1930's.
At age 17 he enlisted in the Army Air Force to become a tail gunner on both the B-17 and B-29 bombers.
After World War II Edward attended college at Texas A&I in Kingsville to earn a Bachelors of Science degree and a Master’s in Education.
Edward taught Agriculture for over three decades in Harlingen, Rio Hondo, and San Benito. He enjoyed working with the FFA, leadership activites, contests, and livestock projects.
Edward took great pleasure and pride in working to create his beautiful yard and gardens at his home in Harlingen. Once retired, he and his wife were able to fulfill their dreams of extensive travels together and spending time at their vacation home in Pagosa Springs, Colorado.
At the end of the day, Ed would say, "Today was a great day!" His family is confident that he would now say "My life was a great life."
Burial and services will be held in Rockdale, Texas with the immediate family.
A family memorial service will be held at a later date.
