John E. Walker, age 71, passed away Wednesday, September 14 in Weslaco, Texas following complications from cancer and COVID. Born in Massachusetts, he married Lenore (Mullen) there and in the 47 years that followed, they developed an extraordinary partnership in family and business, eventually moving both to Texas. He lived by simple philosophy, “Get up every day and do your best,” and he led by quiet philanthropy, like donating blood every six weeks for five decades.
With just a high school diploma, he was gifted in mental math, skilled at negotiations, fascinated by current events, and committed to long conversations. He was honorable, dependable, disciplined and determined, devoted to people and purpose.
He is survived by wife Lenore, children Elizabeth, John, and Sara, as well as their spouses David, Mae, and Zack—who he referred to as his “other children," nephews Jake and John, who he welcomed in his home, their spouses Alison and Marie, and if they all could speak, eight children who called him Grandad, including Emma, Rebecca, Bear, Elijah, Peanut, Mila, Milo, and Baby Wise. Additionally, he is survived by siblings David, Linda, Ron, Deborah, Richard, Bill and Marsha, their families, and by others he mentored in his trade, including Michael, Efren, Ismael, and Tony.
There will be a drop-in reception in honor of John on Saturday, September 17 from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. at John Knox Village, Second Floor, 1300 South Border Avenue, Weslaco, TX 78596.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a tribute to Plan International (formerly Foster Parents Plan), an organization John donated to every month for 53 years.
