Maria Irma Ortega, a devoted big sister, loving mother, and free spirit, passed away on November 28, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on January 30, 1950, she embraced life with a sense of adventure, determination, and unwavering love for those she cared about.
From a young age, Maria Irma took her role as the eldest sibling to heart — protector, guide, and steady presence. Her family always knew they could rely on her strength, her stubborn resolve, and her fierce loyalty.
As a graduate from the University of Texas at Pan Am and Harlingen High School (class of 1969), education was one of her greatest passions. She believed deeply in the power of learning and encouraged everyone around her to grow, strive, and pursue the futures they deserved. That belief guided much of her life’s work. Maria Irma spent many years as a social worker and later a supervisor with the State of Texas Department of Human Services, where she dedicated herself to advocating for families and helping those in need. After retiring from the State of Texas, her love of learning led her into a second career as a teacher for Las Yescas Elementary, Alief Middle School, and Varnett Charter School — a role in which she inspired and uplifted countless students.
She lived life with joy and independence, never losing her spark or her drive to chase the things she believed in. Goal-oriented and resilient, she faced challenges head-on and taught those around her the value of perseverance and compassion.
Her free spirit, laughter, and boldness will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her daughter Valerie and husband Randall Fernandez, and grandchildren Meagan and Bailey; and by her son Hector Nicolas Valdez and granddaughters Jacqueline and Serena. She is also survived by her beloved siblings Juan Ortega, Lydia Carrasco, David Ortega, and Dianna Guillette.
There will be a rosary for Maria Irma on Friday, December 5th at 6 PM CST at Heavenly Grace Funeral home located at 26873 White Ranch Road in La Féria, Texas. Additionally, on Saturday, December 6th, there will be a memorial service at Heavenly Grace Funeral Home starting at 1 PM CST followed by the funeral service at 2 PM located at Restlawn Memorial Park at 14166 US-83 Business in La Féria, Texas.
In loving memory of Maria Irma, the family would like to thank fellow family, loved ones, and friends for all the continued support, love, condolences, and continued prayers.
