Born on April 7, 1955, Mike was a lifelong Texan. He was raised in Harlingen and grew up surfing along the Gulf Coast. Mike attended Blinn Junior College and Texas A&M University before settling in Houston. After many years, he retired to Laguna Vista and enjoyed living so close to South Padre Island- his favorite place.
Mike lived a life deeply connected to the ocean and the simple joys it brought him. A true coastal soul, he found peace and happiness in surfing early in the morning, fishing along quiet shores, and spending long afternoons on the golf course. Music was a constant rhythm in Mike’s life—he loved it for its power to connect people, evoke memories, and fill a home with joy. Those who knew him best will remember the sound of his favorite songs - likely sent via text in the wee hours of the morning or blasted through the speakers of his record player.
Mike shares two daughters, Elise Rose-Caraeff (Rio) and Gillian Rose-Hassell (Paul), with his former wife Yvette Olvera Rose. He took immense pride in being “Papi Mike” to his beloved grandchildren—River and Violette Caraeff, and Theo and Mirabelle Hassell.
Mike shared many wonderful years with his partner, Gwynn Bennett Rose, and had a special bond with her sons, William Bennett and David Drone, and grandchildren—Ty, Jagger, Hendrix, Maverick, and Ryker Bennett. Summers spent with them were among his happiest times.
Mike is lovingly remembered by his sisters, Kim Parker (David) and Julianne Caverly (Patrick), his brother, Casey (Walt), and his nieces, Caitlin Dodson (Grant) and Shannon Parker, and by many friends, most of whom were lifelong. He was preceded in death by his parents, Patti and Bruce Reeves, and Gene Rose.
Mike was a deeply feeling and complicated person, who lived life with an all or nothing attitude and a profound love for the people he cared about the most.
Although his presence will be greatly missed, the love he shared and the joy he brought will continue to ripple through the lives of those who knew him.
Mike’s family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Treasure Hills Residential Care Home for the care and love shown to him.
A celebration of Mike’s life will be at a later date on South Padre Island, a place he truly loved.
