Born on December 3, 1939, in Evansville, IN, he was the son of the late William Thompson and Edna Oost. He graduated from Bosse High School in Evansville.
Chuck proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1964. During that time, he enjoyed singing with his buddies, even appearing in a talent show. Following his military service, he built a long career and retired from Whirlpool Corporation.
He married Mary Catherine “Catie” Thompson in 1987. Together, they bought a historic home in Evansville and renovated and decorated it to make it theirs. An amateur handyman with determination and vision, Chuck took pride in tackling do-it-yourself projects, like finishing the basement, building a screened-in gazebo porch, and refinishing the original flooring. Even as the family moved to different homes, he continued to put his skills to work and personalize each home. He continued working with tools in his garage in La Grange, KY well into his 80s, always finding something to repair or create.
He had a lifelong love of movies and loved to collect and display movie posters. He loved to settle into his recliner for a movie with a large bowl of popcorn, peanut M&Ms and a Diet Coke. His love of The Wizard of Oz, Snow White and Beauty and the Beast now lives on in his granddaughter, Zoey. He also enjoyed keeping up with TV talent shows like The Voice and America’s Got Talent.
Chuck delighted in decorating for the holidays — especially Halloween and Christmas — transforming the house each season. In the ‘90s, he would host extravagant holiday parties with his wife. He took great pride in their decor and enjoyed treasure hunting at yard sales and consignment shops. He collected Hallmark Keepsake ornaments and Department 56 houses, which he would organize in elaborate displays. He also enjoyed riding bikes with his family and was especially fond of his recumbent bicycles.
In his later years, he especially cherished time spent with his grandchildren Zoey and Nico — drawing pictures together and playing outside. He loved to share the holidays with them, setting up Easter egg hunts and wrapping their many Christmas presents. He even finished refurbishing a backyard playset for them at the age of 85. Additionally he played PC video games, especially those with war themes and realistic planes and tanks, well into his 80s. He was so proud that these games kept him young.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Catie, and their daughter, Catherine (Andre) of La Grange. He was a proud grandfather to Megan Thompson, Zoey Tsai, and Nico Tsai.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Beverly Tyler; and his daughter, Heather McKibben.
He will be remembered for his humor, his craftsmanship, his strong presence, and the deep love he had for his family. The holidays won’t be the same without him.
Visitation will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, 502 N 5th Ave, La Grange, KY 40031, on March 31, 2026, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am, followed by a Funeral Mass beginning at 11:00 am. Burial to follow at Floydsburg Cemetery.
