Micheal Dewayne “Mike” Brown was born to the late Earl Edward and Anna Elizabeth (Crockett) Brown of Lagrange, KY, in 1953. Our Heavenly Father called him home on August 19, 2023, at Norton Brownsboro Hospital, Louisville, KY. At an early age, Micheal accepted Christ and served as a member of First Baptist Church in LaGrange.
His early education started at LaGrange Colored School until he integrated into LaGrange Elementary. Micheal was a graduate of Oldham County High School, Class of 1971.
He was known to many as a baseball extraordinaire. Micheal honed his baseball skills and knowledge under the teachings of his maternal grandfather and other Black community members who played in the Negro Leagues. Micheal started in the Little Leagues, and then in school, he played on the Junior Varsity and Varsity Baseball teams.
His love for baseball carried over into his adult years, and this passion became a service to his local Oldham County community. Over twenty years, he coached and umpired Little League Baseball in Oldham County. He also played for numerous men’s community baseball and softball leagues. Micheal’s dedication and outstanding service as an umpire was featured in the local newspaper, Oldham Era. When he was not on the diamond, he could be found working in various factories in Oldham County until he retired.
Micheal loved watching old cowboy movies but was known as a sports enthusiast, keeping up with collegiate and professional sports. He was a die-hard University of Louisville (UofL) fan, which was evident as he represented his team faithfully in his Cardinal red (particularly his hats).
Micheal was not only loved dearly by his family but also by his community. He enjoyed life and had a humorous, one-of-a-kind personality. Micheal never met a stranger. From those he knew driving by to those he didn’t know, he was consistently recognized by his infamous greeting, “Yo! Yo! Yo! What’s Up, Big Dawg!” from the front porch.
Micheal leaves to cherish his memories: his sisters, Dr. Yvonne R. Brown Prather, Pamela A. (Chester) Burrell, Nedra K. Brown; his nieces, Lauren R. Prather (ABD), Monica Brown and Porshia A. (McClain) Craig; his uncle, Charles Robert Crockett; his aunt, Doris Brown (Louisville), several great nieces and nephews (Atlanta) and a host of cousins and friends. Micheal is preceded in death by his parents, the late Earl Edward and Anna Elizabeth (Crockett) Brown; his paternal grandparents, Margaret (Green) and Charles W. Brown Sr; his maternal grandparents, James Anderson and Elizabeth “Lizzie” (Winburn) Crockett and his brother, SGT. Derek L. Brown. He will meet up with his beloved family members and his two best “Road Dogs”- cousins John R. “Blue” Sherley and Charles “Murph” Murphy.
