Allie “Ann" Watson was a remarkable individual who exemplified the finest qualities: loving, generous, intelligent, wise, and beautiful. She brought joy to everyone around her. Ann passed away peacefully on August 30, 2024, in Austin, Texas, at the age of 94.
Born on October 10, 1929, in Childress, Texas, Ann was the daughter of Jerry and Pearl Debenport and one of four siblings, Charles, Sylvia, and Don Debenport. She grew up in Odessa, Texas, where she excelled academically, graduating from Odessa High School and a member of the National Honor Society. Ann went on to study at Christian Junior College for Women, Columbia, Missouri, Associate in Arts-Phi Theta Kappa and later completing her education at the University of Texas-Austin, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English, with highest honors.
She had a gift for teaching, often sharing her knowledge of proper English and grammar when she received emails from loved ones. Known for her high standards and meticulous nature, Ann found great joy in cooking, decorating, entertaining, reading, and playing the piano.
Ann was deeply involved in her community, actively participating in her Episcopal church and supporting various programs. A long-time member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, she served on the altar guild, engaged in Bible study, church resale shop, took part in bridge clubs, and other activities. Her faith in God shone through in all aspects of her life, and she will be remembered for her love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control.
Ann was a devoted mother, wife, and homemaker. Her four grandchildren treasure the memories they created with their beloved "Grammy"—cooking, baking, shopping, sleepovers, holiday celebrations, and her unwavering presence at school events. They fondly recall her influence, saying, “She’s the reason I know how to properly set the table.” Ann's home in Lakeway became a backdrop for many cherished family moments, where her radiant smiles reflected her love for family gatherings. They also recall the playful moment when a chair was moved for a game of Wii bowling, which led her to worry about whether it would be returned to its original position in the creases of the carpet.
Ann was predeceased by her son, Richard Allin Watson Jr, her daughter Susan Watson, and her husband, Richard Allin Watson, with whom she shared 62 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they raised three sons in Houston, Texas before establishing their roots in Austin.
She is survived by her two sons, Philip Watson and Jeff (Donna) Watson; her grandchildren Nicole (Darin) Dvorak, Whitney (Jordan) Scroggins, Jonathan and Bailee Watson; and great-grandchildren Hudson and Saylor Dvorak.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on October 10, 2024, at St. Luke's on the Lake, located at 5600 Ranch Rd 620 North, Austin, Texas, with a reception to follow in the church fellowship hall.
