Carie was born in Dallas on April 14, 1975, to David Carroll Martin and Judith Karen Higginbotham Estrada. After graduating from Hanks High School in El Paso, Carie went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology, with high honors, from the University of Texas at Austin. She then continued her studies at Texas Tech School of Law, earning a Doctor of Jurisprudence, summa cum laude. While at Tech Law, Carie served as an Articles Editor for the Law Review and was a member of the Order of the Coif. Carie began her legal career at Thompson & Knight, LLP in Dallas, focusing on oil and gas litigation and international litigation. In 2004, she earned her Master of Law degree in International Legal Studies from NYU School of Law. Over the course of her 16-year career, she earned licenses in Texas, Oklahoma, and New York and was admitted to the Roll of Solicitors of England and Wales. Carie loved practicing law and reluctantly retired from her position of In House Litigation Counsel for Chesapeake Energy in 2016 when daily seizures made it necessary.
It was then that Carie embarked on what was perhaps her favorite career: stay-at-home wife and mom. Carie met Keith Jones in El Paso in 1992 while they were working together at Peter Piper Pizza and they were inseparable from that moment on. Together a total of 32 years, they were married for 25 and had two wonderful children, Ian and Allison.
Carie was a fiercely dedicated mom to her children and believed family comes first—a value she encouraged in all who knew her. She was a fantastic mother who excelled at supporting and guiding Ian and Allison on a daily basis, instilling in them the values and beliefs that were so important to her—values and beliefs that will live on in them. She was a passionate reader, and when the kids were young, you could always find her reading to them (or, if she had a minute, enjoying a book just for herself). If you ever visited Carie in the evenings on one her hospital stays, you know that everything stopped at bedtime so that she could call home and read Harry Potter to the kids. When she wasn’t filling the home with her warmth and kindness, you could find Carie baking with her kids. She had a ferocious sweet tooth and always saved room for dessert! She loved bluebonnets, Texas wildflowers, the Hill Country, and taking the kids to museums and sharing art with them. Before her paralysis, she loved taking walks with Keith and the kids. The hole left by Carie’s absence will be impossible to fill. She was a bright light and a force of nature and we are all blessed for having known and loved her.
Carie was preceded in death by her father, David Carroll Martin. She is survived by her devoted husband, Keith; her two children, Ian and Allison; and her mother, Judith Karen Higginbotham Estrada.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 25, 2024, at 2 pm at the Church of the Cross Episcopal, 18101 W. Highway 71, Suite 120, Austin, Texas 78738. The family requests that any floral arrangements you'd like to send be delivered to the Church of the Cross Episcopal for the service.
